Christmas Decor

Christmas is approaching faster than you can say “Ho, Ho, Ho”, and with Christmas comes festive decorations. While some Christmas decorating trends are timeless, others come and go every year. Do you want to be on-trend with your Christmas décor this year? If so, it’s important to know the major Christmas trends that are coming up this year.

To help make your Christmas décor decisions easier, interior design expert Ryan McDonough at MyJobQuote.co.uk has teamed up with several other interior design and Christmas décor experts to create this ultimate guide on the biggest Christmas decorating trends of 2023.

Celestial Christmas

Celestial Christmas décor is one of the first trends that have caught the attention of interior designers and Christmas décor experts. “Be it the sparkling moon and star decorations or galaxy-themed ornaments, this trend will bring a dreamy and magical vibe to your home”, explains Zev Freidus, house interior specialist and founder of ZFC Real Estate.

“You can even incorporate twinkling lights to create a mesmerising starry night effect”, Freidus adds. Think about the night sky and consider how you can incorporate this into your Christmas décor.

Natural Elements

“Another trend that is making its way into many homes this year is the use of natural elements in Christmas decorations”, explains Alex Locklear, interior designer and founder of NC Cash Homebuyers. “From real pine cones and branches to dried citrus fruits and cinnamon sticks, incorporating these elements brings a touch of nature into the festivities. You can also add a touch of sparkle with metallic accents or fairy lights for a warm and cosy feel.”

“The use of sustainable and eco-friendly Christmas decorations is also on the rise. People are becoming more conscious about their environmental impact and are opting for decorations made from recycled materials, such as paper or glass, or using energy-efficient lighting options,” Locklear adds. Adding these types of natural elements to your Christmas décor allows you to achieve a winter wonderland that mimics the colder outdoor conditions at this time of year.

Retro Nostalgia

Retro nostalgia is set to be all the rage this Christmas season. “Expect to see a lot of vintage-inspired decorations and ornaments, as well as traditional colour schemes like red and green”, explains David Mason, interior designer and founder of Knobs.co.

“For this trend, think tinsel and shiny baubles in bright colours, garlands made of popcorn or cranberries, and lots of cosy lighting. This way, you can add a touch of nostalgia to your Christmas decorations while still keeping it modern and chic,” Mason adds.

The retro Christmas look gives adults an opportunity to re-live their childhood Christmas memories and also give their own children a taste of what Christmas was like back in the day. Adding retro decorations is sure to bring nothing but joy to everyone who sees them.

Tech-Enhanced Decorations

“A trend that will dominate this holiday season is Tech-Enhanced Decorations”, explains Raf Michalowski, interior designer and founder of Meble Furniture. This is a futuristic trend that helps to put a brand new modern spin on classic Christmas décor.

“With the rise of smart home devices, more and more people are incorporating technology into their Christmas decorations. Think LED lights that can be controlled through an app, projection mapping displays, and even voice-activated Christmas trees. This trend adds a modern and futuristic touch to traditional holiday décor,” Michalowski adds.

Personalised Christmas Décor

“Another aspect of Christmas decorating trends in 2023 is the emphasis on personalisation and creating meaningful traditions”, explains Ben Stewart, owner of Rusty Rooster Fabrication and Design. “Many people are looking for ways to make memories with their loved ones and are incorporating unique and personalised elements into their decorations.” By doing this, homeowners can create new family traditions that will live on for many years to come.

“This trend can include making homemade ornaments, creating personalised Christmas cards, or incorporating family photos into the decor. The goal is to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the individual’s personal style and traditions,” Stewart adds. This is also a fun way to get the whole family involved with the decorating. Get your children involved in some decoration-making crafts and allow them to showcase their unique creations throughout the home.

Pastel Candy Décor

“A new trend this year is the pastel candy décor”, explains  Sarah Ruffalo, professional Christmas tree decorator and owner of The Holly Jolly Box. “I am totally in love with this theme for children! It’s perfect for children’s rooms and a tree that is decorated with children’s ornaments.”

Think pastel pinks, blues, greens and yellows. Incorporate these colours in your Christmas décor through pastel tinsel, Christmas tree ornaments, and small accents. You can also get string lights in pastel colours to help complete the look.

Blue Christmas

Blue is set to be a leading colour trend for Christmas 2023. “While red and green are timeless, deep blues accented with silvers and golds are big this year, offering a sophisticated and contemporary twist to traditional colour schemes”, explains Eric R. Pokusa, interior designer and owner of Fort Collins Cabinet Kings.

Blue creates a colder and more minimalistic appearance when it comes to Christmas décor. There are many different tones and shades of blue. Consider mixing various blue shades to add more interest. Blue also goes very well when paired with either gold or silver. Silver adds a cooler touch to the look, while gold adds a warmer touch.

Organic Textiles

“One of the standout trends this year is using organic textiles to create a warm, inviting, and environmentally friendly holiday atmosphere”, explains Barbara Stern, editor-in-chief at Ottoman Textiles. Textiles can help to add depth, interest, and warmth to your home.

“We’re seeing a surge in the popularity of decorations like tree skirts, stockings, and table runners made from natural fibres such as organic cotton, linen, and burlap. These materials not only add a rustic charm to the decor but also align with the sustainable practices that are becoming increasingly important to consumers,” Stern adds.

Monochromatic Elegance

Another trend that is set to be big in Christmas décor this year is monochromatic elegance. Monochromatic Christmas decorating is all about choosing a single colour or metallic theme and running with it,” explains Kyle Leman, home expert at Crossroads Foundation Repair.

“White Christmas decor, for instance, exudes a sense of winter wonderland elegance. Adorn your tree with all-white ornaments, decorate with white string lights, and use silver or white candles. This minimalist approach creates a cohesive and sophisticated look, and it’s easy to add a touch of colour through accents like colourful ribbon or ornaments for a chic, timeless holiday appearance,” Leman adds.

Shimmer and Shine

Shimmer and shine is another Christmas décor trend that is set to be big this year. “Mixed metals are fashionable in both home and Christmas decor, so it’s possible that everything that glitters during the holiday season is not gold, but perhaps silver, pewter, bronze, or platinum”, says Jack Williams, founder of Handyman Reviewed.

“Metals provide the last touch of glitz and glitter to our Christmas trees, whether they are classic silver and gold or striking gold and black. Rich metallics also work incredibly well with almost any colour scheme or motif. For a more opulent appearance, try for more subdued metallic tones like champagne gold, pewter, iron, or bronze. Alternatively, go full Gatsby,” Williams adds.
