The summer season welcomes shiny new interior trends. As the weather gets warmer, it’s no surprise that everyone wants to bring the sunshine inside too. Using TikTok to forecast trends, summer 2024 emphasises bold aesthetics, natural elements, and a harmonious blend of comfort and style. Whether you’re planning a full home makeover or simply looking to update a few key pieces, these trends will help you create a space that feels fresh, inviting, and perfectly in tune with the warmer months.
Darren Watts, Showroom Developer and Design Director at Wren Kitchens has shared five ways to infuse your interiors with the lively essence of this sunny season.
1) Floralcore
The growing emphasis on sustainability, wellness, and biophilic design principles has elevated natural elements from accessories to central components of stylish and healthy living environments. With #gardentok holding an impressive 11m views and #plantsoftiktok 3m views1, the floralcore trend is set to be summers nod to the botanical interior trend. Floral patterns on fabrics and textiles are a key element of this trend. Upholstery, curtains, cushions, and bed linens featuring floral designs can introduce a touch of nature and colour into a space. From delicate, small-scale prints to large, eye-catching blooms, floral textiles can be used to create either a subtle, romantic feel or a bold, statement look.
2) Kitsch soft furnishings
Kitsch, with its playful, eclectic, and often nostalgic appeal, is making a significant summer comeback in interiors. Kitsch soft furnishings, in particular, are becoming a popular trend for those looking to add personality, whimsy, and a sense of fun to their living spaces. Kitsch design thrives on bold, vibrant patterns and colours. Soft furnishings like cushions, throws, and rugs feature eye-catching prints such as checks, stripes geometric shapes, and animal motifs. These items often combine multiple bright colours such as pink and greens, creating a lively and dynamic atmosphere. Incorporate kitsch into your kitchen in a subtle way by using fabric baskets with quirky patterns for storing fruits, vegetables, or kitchen linens. Or instantly inject a sense of fun into your kitchen with patterned tablecloths and runners.
3) Tomato red
Tomato red will be the shade of the interior industry, thanks to last year’s break out fashion trend ‘tomato girl summer’. This colour, reminiscent of ripe tomatoes at the peak of summer, adds energy, and a touch of drama to any space. Tomato red works exceptionally well in kitchens and dining areas, evoking a sense of warmth and conviviality. Use it for kitchen backsplashes, cabinetry, or small appliances. In dining rooms, tomato red table linens, dishware, and chairs can create an inviting atmosphere. Consider a tomato red sofa, armchair, or dining chairs to add a pop of colour to your interiors. These statement pieces can be complemented with cushions and throws in coordinating or contrasting colours for a cohesive look.
4) Black kitchens
Recently, a few celebrities have shared their kitchen renovations, all with one thing in common, black. Stacey Solomon, Courtney Cox and Marvin and Rochelle Humes have showcased the luxury, elegance, and modernity of the colour in their kitchens. Although not a typical summer shade, black is trending for those who appreciate a modern and minimalist design, thanks to the clean lines and sleek aesthetic. Black can be combined with natural elements like wood and stone to create a balanced and inviting look this season. Metallic accents in gold, brass, or stainless steel can add a touch of glamour and sophistication.
5) Sociable kitchens
According to a YouGov survey, 58% of people surveyed said that sharing mealtimes resulted in a greater connection with others2. Open-plan kitchen layouts, such as those with an island, are foundational to the sociable kitchen trend which is hot for the summer. By integrating the kitchen with the dining and living areas, these layouts create a seamless flow that encourages interaction and inclusivity. Plus, an open-plan design makes it easier for hosts to engage with guests or family members while preparing meals.
