With the release of a new Beetlejuice film, and spooky season creeping up on us, 3 interior experts are sharing their insight on how we can nail a Burton-esque interior…
Ellie Kennedy, interior expert at 247 Blinds shares her expertise on choosing the right window dressings when recreating a gothic interior style.
“A key element of the Tim Burton aesthetic is, of course, darkness. With this in mind, opt for window dressings that closely match the dark tones of your wallpaper or paint. Your blinds should blend into the overall backdrop of the space, creating a cocoon-like atmosphere.
“Alternatively, to embrace the Beetlejuice styling more closely, replace your existing blinds with a black and white striped roller blind for instant impact. This style looks great in the run up to Halloween too, becoming part of decorations in a slightly subtler way.
“Whilst we’re getting closer to the autumn months, it is still light outside until late into the evening so consider opting for blackout blinds and curtains so you can create a moody and darkly atmosphere at any time of the day.”
Creating a theatrical, gothic environment is always enhanced by your lighting choices. For a Burtonesque lighting scheme, it’s important to consider both the shape and placement of your fixtures.
Marlena Kaminska, designer at ValueLights, says: “To recreate the quirky aesthetic of Beetlejuice, you need to look behind the typical ‘rules’ of interior design and blend styles which are seemingly mismatched, but still cohesive.
“Burton does this so well through his whimsical exploration of shape, form and texture – while maintaining cohesiveness through a consistent colour palette.
“To craft a purposely off-kilter aesthetic, incorporate lamps and fixtures with unusual designs and ornate details, such as twisted stems and textured shades.
“Gothic motifs are key to the Burtonesque style. Install chandeliers and candle-shaped bulbs with black or dark metal finishes to bring in an element of eerie theatricality.
“Outside of the shape of your fixtures, lighting can also be used to make your home feel more atmospheric. Avoid overhead ceiling lighting and instead, layer sconces and floor lamps to create low-lit pools of light. Frosted shades can further enhance this moody ambience.”
When it comes to giving your living space a touch of whimsical, Burton-esque style Sarah McCann, print and product expert at Voyage Maison shares:
“Dark wallpaper can often feel intimidating if you’re unsure how to style it, but can create the perfect dramatic effect if you want to achieve a Burton-esque interior. Wallpaper is an easy yet effective way to inject personality and interest into a room, especially when trying to achieve a whimsical or gothic style.
“Darker patterned wallpaper can create a striking feature wall, especially in your living room, for example behind your television or a bookcase. Dark walls are also great for highlighting decor with metallic or lighter finishes, so it’s great for pairing with sofas, chairs or your soft furnishings in lighter colours.
“When evoking a gothic theme, incorporate elements like scented candles, dark floral patterned cushions and skull ornaments into your space. You can add subtle hints of the theme or really showcase a full Beetlejuice inspired space – whatever feels most authentic to you.”
