Tiling

2024 is set to be the year we embrace the joy of living, in a way that is authentically ‘you’. This will be translated into interior trends by ensuring that homes reflect individual passions and identity whilst also being functional to meet day-to-day needs. When it comes to flooring, tiles will be popular this year with a lot of unique designs – however, which ones are expected to dominate the interior space?

Johanna Constantinou, interior trends expert at Tapi shares that traditional patterned tiles will see a lot of uptake in 2024.

“Vibrant and loud tiles are set to make a splash in 2024. Patterned tiles add visual interest and can be used to create unique and stylish designs. Luxury vinyl tiles are becoming a popular choice for those looking to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to their space without spending too much, particularly popular for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and stairs.

“When you’re choosing patterned vinyl flooring, it’s best to consider how it’ll fit into your overall design scheme as well as being practical. Start by assessing the existing colour palette, style, and theme of your room, then select patterns that match the theme, such as opting for geometric patterns in modern settings, or going for floral and traditional patterns in keeping with a classic or vintage aesthetic.”

Molly Woodward-Moor, creative director at Stone Superstore explains the coming year is centred around ‘Unfiltered Optimism’, focusing on colour-drenching and dopamine-fuelled decor choices, and this trend can be achieved without the need for extensive renovations.

“One example of this is awkward alcoves as they can often be overlooked in home design and can be frustrating to style. However, incorporating a pop of colour or vibrant tiles into these nooks can transform them into a quirky, stylish space.”

Molly recommends incorporating mood-enhancing, invigorating shades like cobalt blue, tomato red, golden yellow, or olive green.

“Whether opting for a harmonious monochromatic scheme or a daring clash of energetic hues, the key is to embrace colours you connect with. This allows homeowners to infuse their personality into their home, transforming neglected corners into dynamic focal points that resonate with the ‘Unfiltered Optimism’ trend.”

Mark Sellars, Head of Product Design and Development at Wren Kitchens, predicts mirrored tiles will also make a statement in 2024, specifically within backsplashes.

“This year is all about creating the illusion of an open and larger space, and we predict mirrored backsplash tiles to make an appearance within many kitchens, specifically smaller kitchens. The light bounces off mirrored tiles to create brightness, and so we suggest placing them next to underlit cupboards for the full brightening effect.”

Traditional tile patterns will also continue to make a comeback, and Mark says herringbone and chevron tiles will be popular this year.

“Herringbone tiles are already a sought-after tile design within flooring, but this year we will see the chevron tiles transfer to kitchen backsplashes. As this design is slightly more ornate than the standard tiling design, look to pair with neutral colours and a simple kitchen, as this tiling design will make a statement on its own.”
