Build August PDF

Build Magazine 2 Editor’s Letter Welcome to the newest issue of BUILD Magazine. The construction industry is an ever-changing one, which is probably expected, given just how many facets are involved. Alongside those firms devoted to erecting towering new structures, there are those whose passion lies more on the interiors and on designing pleasant abodes. Some have carved out a notable presence for developing bespoke technology to assist in comprehensive planning and execution of complex projects. The evolution of the construction industry, in all of its components, is indeed intimately tied to the progress of modern technology – the one informs the other in a great many ways. In particular, the development of new materials has opened many a chance to diversify the market through innovative solutions. While this is certainly nothing new, there is an emerging realisation that in this competitive industry, the firms that are able to develop niches, and bring a well-tuned, specialised product or service to the wider market, are those that make the biggest impact. Terraplas’ wide range of long-life ‘turf protection’ tiles, as well as Mabey’s devotion to efficient, client-friendly bridge-building, are among those that have succeeded in becoming hallmarks of their trade. Business practices that were once cutting-edge are increasingly common, as firms strive to match the demands of their discerning clients and expand their foothold in a highly competitive industry. We draw especial attention to the growing momentum behind the practices of Building Information Modelling (BIM) that are sweeping across the construction industry. The ability to generate digital representations of a construction project has come about as a direct result of new advances in technology, and firms across the world, from County Conwy to Adelaide, South Australia, have embraced its holistic approach with open arms. These represent but a selection of the trends that are apparent in today’s construction industry. Doubtless, future technology and disciplines will continually shape our understanding. In the present, meanwhile, we hope that you enjoy this issue of BUILD Magazine. Contact the Editor at: [email protected] +44 (0) 203 725 6842
