Build Magazine April 2016

Build Magazine 29 Real Estate The development is well underway with over 1,224 homes that are already up and running, ready to start growing a socially sustainable community. The development area will essentially be its own little village, with shops, schools, doctor’s surgeries, dedicated transport links and a council-run construction skills centre. Before Berkeley took on the large-scale build- ing project, the site was known as the Ferrier Estate, and was one of the most economically deprived areas in London in the eighties. The community was poorly integrated with the rest of London, and some residents were on the wrong side of the law. Ferrier had to be completely demolished so work could start on Kidbrooke Village. As well as promoting sustainable living, the Kidbrooke development also has a Construction Skills Centre which is a specialist training centre for young people that want to get into the property and construction industry, and work towards furthering their education. Yasar Ugur is a Trainee Site Manager at Berkeley, and is one of the schemes success stories: “Before I joined Berkeley, I was hanging out with people who were in gangs and now I’m learning and developing my skills. I think about my future now and how this job has opened doors for me to construction and the big impact it’s had on my life.” The billion pound regeneration of Kidbrooke is the result of a partnership between the Berkeley Group, Lifshutz Davidson Sandilands, Greenwich council, Southern Housing Group, the HCA and TfL. Kidbrooke Village Development in South-East London Aims to Promote Sustainable Living London property developer Berkeley is currently working towards redeveloping Kidbrooke Village based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The redevelopment project will certainly give the economy a boost when it comes to em- ployment, driving over 20,000 jobs and creating homes for around 5,000 residents. before (left), after (above)
