Build Magazine 63 Products and Innovation How does SMARTGLASS Dynamic work? SMARTGLASS Dynamic has been developed over a number of years by scientists in the US, who have honed the technology so that it’s efficient, viable and easy to use. The science behind the functional- ity of the glazing is relatively simple – the five-layer electrochromic coating reacts to a low electrical voltage (less than 5V DC). This low-level electricity passes through the coating, causing lithium ions and electrons to transfer through the layers, thus creating a darker shade. When the polarity of the voltage is changed, the ions and electrons simply move back through to their original layer, returning the glazing to a completely clear state. The electrical requirement for the glazing is not difficult to install – just a simple wire through the frame is all that is needed. What SMARTGLASS products are available? This new type of glazing has mainly been used for commercial buildings (curtain walling etc.) in the past, but the development of the technology now means it’s available for residential properties too. SMARTGLASS Dynamic, powered by SageGlass is brand new to the UK, and the initial product range is launching with a choice of modular lantern roofs for conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms. Over time the range will widen to include other products and innovations. These lantern roofs are available with just a 5-10 day lead time and are simple to install – all that’s required other than a routine roof lantern instal- lation is a 5volt DC power supply that the module can simply be ‘plugged’ into. The glazing tints can then be used straight away – no set up or settling in period is required.
