Build Magazine 24 Design Studio One is a custom design firm specializing in comprehensive architectural services for Hospitality, Wellness, and Single Family Residential markets. Operating throughout the United States, the firm provides architectural and interior design services that emphasize sustainable solutions. With extensive experience in design and client-focused project management, Studio One strives to provide integrated solutions, working with all parties to deliver the best service and outcome from concept to completion. Since 2004, Studio One has undertaken a wide array of projects in both commercial and residential sectors across the country. Founder Stephen Flanagan explains, “at Studio One, we aspire to be a leading force within our target market, developing custom solutions others imitate. While we expect to expand our footprint and our firm, we want to stay nimble and give our clients the time and energy they so deserve for the generous opportunity we are granted in working with them every day.” “As a major component of this, we have developed strategies to seek out and uncover both latent challenges and opportunities through a careful reading of the landscape and collaborative dialogue with our clients. With attention to detail and sustainability, we seek to produce projects intrinsically connected to our clients’ aspirations, site, and budget by seeing beyond expectations, weaving the art of listening into the contextual fabric of each design endeavour.” With ever-increasing benchmarks for building in the developed world, site-specific strategies for sustainable solutions will be expected to work in tandem with the local environment. For Studio One, employing the best practices in meeting these objectives will focus on the art of blending in a way similar to Aikido: yielding to some forces so as to be nearly invisible while simultaneously reinforcing and redirecting others to produce more concentrated outcomes. “However,” Stephen adds, “even with the added mandates, our market niche is rapidly expanding and we see that only improving over the next 12 months, specifically in the Wellness and Hospitality markets. As vital as sustainability is for the industry, the planet, and the future, Stephen, like the rest of his team, believes that “architecture’s true A Crystallised Approach S impact is not on our surroundings, but within us. We focus our efforts on designing around the five senses and developing a special kind of order that is intended to promote joy, calm, healing, and rejuvenation. “We look to create site-specific solutions that are not just unique, but uniquely suited to our clients. This requires us to be untethered to any form-based solution in order to develop strategies that are inherently deeper than stylistic expression. For us, innovation comes not from using a new tool or learning of a new material, but from finding unique opportunity in the overlap between the physical realities of the context and the more ephemeral aspirations of our clients.” As an example of putting these ideas into practice, Stephen reflects upon some of his firm’s most outstanding successes. “We are still in the process of developing a winery, which combines the functional requirements of all-new operational facilities around an existing vineyard, with a more extended program that goes beyond a tasting room to include a restaurant, bed and breakfast, event centre, amphitheatre, retail space, retreat house, extensive outdoor amenities, and support spaces on a 40-acre site. This project has been the most intriguing for us because of its extended program and focus on place making. “Before we even started the design of any of the buildings, developing the master plan crystalized the approach to each component, and helped us leverage our design strategies to assist our client in achieving his commercial objectives by focusing on the patron experience. It is this project that has helped us to see how all these vectors best intersect.” Alongside this prominent project, Stephen Flanagan and his designers have also embarked on a range of other design challenges, all of which have cemented their hard-earned reputation as designers with purpose and style as guiding principles. From an Asian-fusion contemporary restaurant, to a non-denominational contemplative space perched high above the North Carolina Blueridge Mountains, Studio One’s increasingly diverse portfolio is a true demonstration of the firm’s versatility, and a lesson in how masterful planning can provide a road map for development over time.
