Sandra leads tangramGulf’s design studio and nurtures client relationships across the Middle East and North Africa. Possessing many talents, Sandra’s passion lies in the development of regional and sustainable design practices, for which tangramGulf are most notably recognised. In 2017, Sandra was elected to Fellowship of the RIBA, who were particularly impressed by her sustainability work in a challenging context throughout her career of project delivery across the MENA region. Where recent work for passive sustainable design principles of an Emergency Response Centre for the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation in Abu Dhabi, was recognized upon completion, by the Middle East Architects’ Awards as winner of “Sustainable Project of the Year - 2015”.The facility became operational in 2015 and tangramGulf were praised for its simple, yet innovative, fresh and welcoming design. Essentially, the scheme was a culmination of over two decades of practice, research and reinterpretation of local and traditional design and building techniques, emphasising and promoting a built environment that sits within and works with its surrounding natural environment. At the project’s handover ENEC Deputy CEO, stated: “The completion of the ERC facility is an important milestone in ENEC’s operational readiness. These facilities were completed on time, and to the highest standards of quality and safety. I am very proud of the work the team has done in order to get to the completion stage.” Furthermore, Sandra’s work demonstrates a very high level of thought, consideration for the environment, and realization of client needs and values, effecting and influencing change and greater awareness and understanding of locally held traditions and practices of architectural design, building technologies and techniques. The value of her work is now being recognized internationally, with awards notably for the 200 bed Al Khor Private Hospital Design, which is currently under construc- tion in Qatar. Ultimately, through Sandra’s leadership, tangramGulf are currently ex- ploring the delivery of “zero energy” designs, and working towards “Grid Neutral” energy efficient developments for projects across the region. tangramGulf Architecture & Design Director of the Year - UAE Sandra Woodall is a UK qualified architect and urban designer based in the GCC region, living and working in Dubai, UAE for over 20 years.
