106 Build 2017 Architecture Awards ossessing a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of architecture, Jeremy Steere has numerous qualifications, ranging from Bachelor’s degrees in Architectural Studies and Architecture from U.C.T, to his most recent qualification in 2000; P.D.P. - Property Development Programme U.C.T. In 2004, Jeremy Steere Architect emerged from its home in Mtunzini, a coastal village 120km’s north of Durban - a 1940’s railway house. The office was built above a flat in the garden as a small, yet functional space with large sliding folding windows opening up onto the dune forest providing sneaky glimpses of the sea. After expanding, space constraints required another office for staff comfort and the firm decided to open an office in Eshowe 45km away. At the time Eshowe had no architect and a need was evident with rural projects such as clinics, hospitals and schools being designed by architects from Richards Bay and Empangeni. As such, it was down to Jeremy and his firm to build his own, new office. It is not often an architect gets to be his own client. The new office in Eshowe was one of the renovation projects the firm took on in 2007. The existing building comprised of a ground floor apartment accessed from the main street and a first floor apartment, which could be accessed via an external staircase on the South Elevation. The first floor was changed into the office and the apartment downstairs refurbished and maintained as an apartment. The motivation behind its renovation was to maintain the original Modernist architectural features whilst bringing in a few contemporary touches and opening out the interior spaces. The building is located on a busy street in Eshowe. It is a fine example of what the company can do and was likely an enjoyable project to work on, as Jeremy was able to be his own client. Alongside renovating its own offices, the firm has undertaken many projects since its establishment.
