The studio enjoys transforming existing buildings for new uses in a way that respectfully juxtaposes traditional architectural styles with modern design interventions. Inspired by ‘Pataphysics – a philosophical and artistic movement dedicated to exploring the imaginary – the studio is interested in the poetic potential of architecture. The bold, and sometimes experimental use of materials, exemplifies this in Patalab’s pursuit of an architecture for the everyday that nonetheless feels special by celebrating life around us. “We love to do bespoke designs that reflect the personality of our clients and are very passionate about detailing: we design furniture and even products to complement and extend the architecture” states Uwe Schmidt-Hess, founder of Patalab Architecture. An exemplar for this approach is the recently completed project Heath House in North-West London. The brief for the architects for the transformation of a detached Arts and Crafts townhouse was to create an airier, lighter and more contemporary feel for a young family’s home and their modern art collection. Patalab opted for a design that expands the house horizontally thus making most of the spacious garden that surrounds the building. The living spaces include a new-build wing that is a long gallery-like space, establishing an inside-outside relationship not previously present in the house. This has been a critical factor in giving the remodelled home a feeling of openness and fluidity in keeping with the client’s desire for a less formal ambience. Looking ahead, Projects and enquiries for Patalab are getting larger and more international. The studio is currently involved in a residential project in Amsterdam, the masterplan for a country estate in the south of France and the refurbishment of three apartment blocks in Berlin. This has led to the decision to open a second office in Berlin which will provide the firm with many great future opportunities for growth and success. Most Renowned International Architectural Studio – London & Best North West London Residential Design Project: Heath House Patalab is an architectural studio with offices in London and Berlin designing distinctive contemporary spaces for a wide range of private, public and corporate clients in the UK, Germany and across Europe. We profile the firm to showcase the hard work and dedication that have led it to the success it enjoys today. F AR170018
