Paolino discusses his latest project and how it epitomises his firm’s architectural style. “My latest project, the one that gives me more satisfaction because of its conception and execution is “Capilla Filamentario”. This is probably one of the smallest projects we have ever done in the office but also one of the most significant because of its simplicity and symbolism. “The project is an Ecumenical Chapel that better represents our philosophy of design because it breaks the rules of the religious typology; instead of making an axial path through the space, with the altar at the end of the visit, we propose a peripheral procession instead. It is a five stage procession that better helps you to mentally prepare for the religious event or only to have a personal introspection visit to the place.” Overall Paolino believes that the best architecture is done with very little because with fewer elements of composition it becomes possible to achieve the perfect balance between the elements of contrast inherent to architec- tural creation. Contrasts set in balance help to solve the dichotomy between form and function just as DNA regulates processes and forms in nature. He concludes by explaining his philosophy in more detail and how this guides him in his projects. “Looking ahead, I propose that design can be conceived as a plot of balanced contrasts that contain within their DNA the formal components that aim for harmony between building and context. Architectural language evolves as a search for the balanced mediation between man and nature through solutions that promote technical progress, cultural advancement and social integration.
