BUILD - Architecture Awards 2017

32 Build 2017 Architecture Awards stablished in 2001 by Raymond Thompson and Carolina Baroni, their London-based practice includes a dedicated and dynamic team of architects. The company works with both private clients and property developers; the private client looking for a unique new house or turn-key refurbishment of an existing property and the developer that appreciates both the firm’s ability to add quality and value through the way the buildings and projects are designed. With English and Italian architects respectively at the helm the firm’s projects combine clarity and warmth whilst always focusing on providing the client with the solution they need, as Ray highlights. “Here at Thompson + Baroni Architects we have a strong understanding of return on investment. The commercial side of the practice’s work draws on numerous years of dealing with planning applications with a key objective to maximize the value of land. Working on high-end projects, Thompson + Baroni have developed a minimal, modernist style for London. As such, our approach to work is very simple. We establish a clear brief with our clients. We are realistic and honest about expectations but strive to push the boundaries where we can. We are skilled and adept at planning consents, which maximize potential value and architectural integrity. “Our private clients are prepared to push the budget and brief in order to get the house that they dreamt for and aspire to. We work hand-in-hand with these clients to deliver a truly bespoke project. There are some core principles that we like to adhere to but the projects are fully tuned to the client’s requirements. The developer appreciates our technical and strategic knowledge and understanding of the planning process to deliver a project with a strong return on investment.” “Overall, our mission is to maintain and grow a successful, widely recognized architectural office where we can continue to develop our design signature and continuously improve the service we offer to our clients. In order to achieve this, we need to always continue to produce exceptional quality work that surpasses clients’ expectations.” What sets the firm apart, according to Ray, is the experience he and his fellow directors bring to the projects they undertake, and their commitment to creating innovative projects. “To ensure that we stand out from our competitors, our directors work closely on all projects and offer our clients, both residential and commercial, a direct route to speak to us throughout the project. This means that there is always an experienced steadying hand closely connected with the job. “Alongside this, our work is distinctive as thoughtful environments influenced by minimal, poetic, light-filled spaces and calming homes. We pride ourselves on producing work with a minimal, modernist style.” Looking ahead, Ray has big plans, both for the future of Thompson + Baroni Architects and the wider architecture space. “Over the coming months, we have a Belgravia mews house project in the pipeline that will be a great way to carry forward the expertise we have gained from the previous two we have completed and the one we are working on now. We also have new developer clients we are working with that have come to us for our design inspiration as well as financial acumen. It’s exciting to work for the best development potential from the site as well as create great architecture. This is a project that enhances the user’s quality of life and well being through plenty of light and emotionally satisfying environments to live and work in. “Within the wider architecture industry, we are hoping that we will see a lot of new housing projects that steer away from the suburban sprawl you see on the edges of most of our cities, and evolve into something more cosmopolitan, both stylistically and hopefully also in the mindsets of the people that will live there. Although we love designing modern, minimalist architecture alongside exciting new buildings we are always careful about the context in which our buildings or architectural interventions will be realized. Buildings do not exist in a silo and need to take in the surrounding styles and uses to exist within that context.” Best Residential Design Architect – London & Best London Residential Renovation Project: Kensington Townhouse Thompson + Baroni Architects Limited is a contemporary architecture practice that creates thoughtful environments influenced by minimal, poetic, light-filled spaces and calming homes.
