The company’s founder, lead designer and Managing Partner, Christopher K. Travis, is an internationally recognized expert in the application of human factors disciplines and psychology to architectural problems related to living and work spaces. Christopher explains how he developed a program which enabled him to meet the specific requirements of his clients and how he bought in others from different areas of expertise in order to get the best results. “I began to develop a systematic programming method in 1998 that combined ideas from psychology, neuroscience and architecture. I sought to fulfil the specific positive life outcomes desired by the clients in the spaces that were created. Partnering with a clinical psychologist and a family therapist, an exhaustive workshop was developed that enables our firm to tailor spaces in exact ways to the personality, psychological nature and past experience of clients.” Travis and his design build firm operated for almost forty years in Texas and still takes on projects there, but in 2015, Christopher relocated his practice to the mountain foothills of Denver, Colorado. Christopher discusses why he relocated the firm and how it has worked out for the company. Looking to the future Christopher believes that the rare process in which the firm operates will eventually become the normal way businesses approach residential design. “It was a risky thing relocating our firm to a new market, but we have been lucky. Our approach is radical and atypical but people here are more open to a human-centred approach. That makes sense because the most intimate, personal space of all is the home. In my mind, that is the future of residential design. I expect the kind of things we do now, which are exceedingly rare in applied practice today, to become commonplace.
