Build Infrastructure Awards 2017
Build 2017 Infrastructure Awards 16 ounded in 2001, Bruce Power’s 2,300-acre site on the shores of Lake Huron houses the Bruce A and B generating stations, which each hold four CANDU reactors. Over the past decade, Bruce Power has refurbished all four units at its Bruce A station, returning 3,000 megawatts of clean, low-cost electricity to Ontario consumers. The return of those units allowed the province to close its coal- fired plants which is one of the largest clean-air initiatives in North America. Combined with its Bruce B units, Bruce Power generates 6,400 megawatts at peak and provides 30% of Ontario’s electricity at 30% less than the average residential price of power. Bruce Power is a partnership among TransCanada Corp., Borealis Infrastructure (a trust established by the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System), The Power Workers’ Union and The Society of Energy Professionals. More than 90% of employees also own a part of the company, ensuring that they have a vested interest in operating to the very highest standards. As a corporation, we live each day by a strong and clear set of values that embrace safety, communi- ty, integrity and diversity. To support the long-term provision of safe, reliable power, in December 2015, Bruce Power entered into a long-term agreement with the province, through the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), which established a commercial framework for the company to advance this investment program. The long-term power supply contract provided stability from the company while guaranteeing Ontario ratepayers with a competitively priced source of carbon-free electricity for decades. Through this agreement, Bruce Power’s owners will meet all of the program’s investment requirements while the facility will remain owned by the province and leased to Bruce Power over the long term. The life extension of Bruce Power’s reactors doesn’t just touch the lives of our 4,000 employees – it makes a difference for millions of Ontarians, every day. The impact of life extension will be felt far and wide, including: • $13 billion private investment program from 2016-53 • The Bruce site will be the single largest source of clean energy to 2064 • Contribute $4 billion to Ontario’s economy every year • Support 22,000 direct and indirect jobs across southern Ontario • Instrumental in helping the province achieve its climate change goals Best Private Nuclear Generator 2017 - North America Bruce Power is Canada’s first private nuclear generator, providing 30% of Ontario’s power.
