David Ramirez, General Manager, takes us through the rationale, and the history, behind the firm that came from humble beginnings. “In our beginnings, we were dedicated to collecting both post- consumer and post-industrial plastic bags, which we collected, selected, and delivered as plastic raw materials for the Plastic Industry Sector in El Salvador.” In 2007, the company was legally constituted, under the name Maquinarias y Plásticos, Sociedad Anónima de Capital Variable; being able to abbreviate, Maquiplastic, S.A. de C.V .; in that same year, it also incorporated the recycling of high- density polyethylene and polypropylene injection plastics. “Over the next ten years, we turned to industrialized machinery and started our first exports; we embarked on getting to know the recycling of Tereflate Polyethylene (PET), which at that time had a heyday in Asian countries; we started recycling High Density Blown Polyethylene, which to date is one of our products from which we recycle the most; we started our project for pelletizing and handling raw materials of PS, PVC, PC, ABS, among others.” In 2018, the firm started the creation of plastic wood which David states has been a challenge, however the company’s responsible and positive attitude in its execution has led to great success. “This year, 2020 has been one of the years where, as a company, we achieved continuous improvement objectives by providing recycling services to companies that manufacture finished plastic supplies, and to companies that want to reuse their waste in their production processes, thus generating a self- sustainable system and circular economy.” Maquiplastic now specializes in the sale of recycled raw materials both packed, ground, washed and pelletized, and serves the manufacturing industry of mass consumption products, household products and local, regional and international industries. Comprising seven Salvadoran partners, all from the same family, who had a combined vision of starting a multi-purpose, profitable and environmentally friendly business – Maquiplastic, based in Central America, was born. Following their success in the Recycling and Waste Management Awards 2020, we profiled the firm to discover how they earned a reputation in the industry as one of the best plastic recycling companies operating in Central America.
