S A recent example of the studio’s successful projects is its work on a 800 ㎡ Japanese restaurant in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, set to be completed soon. The key issues the team had to overcome here were their lack of understanding of Azerbaijan’s history, locality, culture, customs and finding a root in Japan. This was like unravelling the roots of building materials and technics that have been established in Japan in a long history through the Silk Road. The team at Innovation Studio Okayama felt that it was important to discover the similarities between Azerbaijan domestic materials, technics and Japanese ones, and expressing the essence of Japan by using local workmanship. This was important not only to understanding other countries’ culture but also to deepening the firm’s cultural understanding, and overall the team is proud of the outcome it is on target to achieve.
