This collaborative approach ensures every project the studio undertakes is innovative and creative. The firm encourages the use of research-based and conceptual architecture by engaging with the local schools of architecture and by having a through- put of relatively young and passionate architects. Each project the studio undertakes is viewed as special and unique, and the team work closely with their clients to engage with them on an emotional level and create something they can be proud of. One of the studio’s latest completed projects is its work re-purposing an old printing press factory into a Library and Learning commons for the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg. The studio’s team removed the roof in the MMA Design Studio: Best Architecture & Urban Design Studio - South Africa For more than 21 years MMA Design Studio, founded by Mphethi Morojele, has provided award-winning design and architecture services to public and institutional clients across South Africa. Having awarded the firm one of our prestigious Architecture Awards for 2019 we profile it and discuss the services and projects that have driven it to win in this competitive programme. W centre of the factory to create a new courtyard and added a new mezzanine level into the existing structure and totally transformed the building. It was challenging to add and delete to the existing steel structure without undermining its integrity, however the MMA Design Studio team are proud of the success of this project and are honoured that it will now be a centre for education to enhance the lives of future generations. Fundamentally, MMA Design Studio’s mission is to transform the African built environment to be in closer harmony with her people and landscapes. This will remain the firm’s focus going forward as the team takes time to reflect on the last 21 years of success and to draw up an exciting new plan for further development.
