This private club is designed to make an oasis for hectic minds. Picking the essence of traditional Oriental and modern Western qualities, the firm adopted Chinese calligraphy and paintings as the key concept. The simplicity and elegance of the design are well implemented through versatile uses of lighting, lines, materials and colour tones across the four key zones: entrance, guest reception area, tea/conference room and spa room. To match the ambience of individual zones, the “retrieve, release, and retrieve” arrangement of lighting creates a unique rhythm and tempo of the space and achieves a sense of wholeness. The creation satisfies both aesthetic and functional purposes in a tasteful and delicate way. To celebrate the practice’s success in this year’s competitive Architecture Awards we explore its work and approach to ensuring every project achieves a satisfactory outcome for every stakeholder. E Among the projects distinctive features is its change of moods with smart uses of lighting and emphasis of human being oneness with nature. A tranquilly dim entrance that calms and soothes, together with a slightly playful projection of room number are the prelude to welcome the guests, and gradually introducing one to more contented and relaxing feeling. Next to the foyer is the guest reception area, which includes a lounge, dining area and indoor entertainment of karaoke and home theatre settings. Guests will be amazed by the vein lines of Sichuan Dolomite that make a beautiful flooring of the entire area, the feature wall of sandstone that takes after a view of mountain ranges, and the gradated curves on the ceiling that resemble the drifting clouds in the sky, which as a whole make a poetic Chinese landscape painting and leave room for one’s imagination with the whiteness in the marble pieces. With the lounge connecting to the dining area, the spaciousness of the club is thus optimized. There is a double sliding door and a wine cabinet between the tearoom and guest reception area; guests may slide it closed to silently enjoy a cup of tea or remain it open for roominess. The lights are dimmed again in the spa room, where guests enjoy ultimate physical and spiritual relaxation. Dark and coarsely-textured stones are used to provide guests with a soul- soothing ambience as in natural scenery.
