BUILD 2019 Architecture Awards 90 May19127 rawing on the expertise of its staff, two_ space+product creates truly unique projects that are the result of a complex examination of a room and its overall designing consideration. The focus has always been on the creation of independent living or working, and experiencing space through the design of innovative products. The firm’s latest project, which won one of our prestigious 2019 Architecture Awards was the new headquarter of the Handelsblatt Media Group GmbH & Co. Kg in Düsseldorf. One of the key challenges was to create a forward-looking environment of 20.000sqm for its 1000 employees. The architecture lets the visitor experience first-hand the identity of print and online brands, in the context of the digitalization of media. Numerous individual spaces extend an invitation to meet. These include the 360° reception; the forum, a modular seating area; the lounge space; the elongated counter of the coffee bar; and the restaurant with its intimate dining spaces. Glass and copper sliding panels allow for flexible room structures. Black and white colours, combined with copper sheets and birch plywood, pay homage to the print media age. Reflective surfaces integrate visitors into the building’s common space. Grey floors serve as a backdrop for experiencing the individual areas, which themselves are characterized by Handelsblatt’s corporate colours: orange and red. two_space+product: Best Commercial Architecture Studio – Germany & Best Office HQ Project: Headquarters of the Handelsblatt Media Group GmbH, Düsseldorf two_space+product is an innovative, modern architecture studio based in Ratingen. D The black, white, and grey spaces of the six office levels are complemented, on a vertical axis, by the colours of the colour wheel, which in turn reflects Handelblatt’s 360°-process motto. Colour-changing film on internal glass walls picks up and changes the internal colour scheme of each level, thus also shaping the building’s external appearance. Through this creative use of space, material and colour, two_ space+product has created a truly unique building that Handelsblatt can be truly proud of and cherish for many years to come. Looking ahead, two_space+product’s ongoing focus is sustainability, as the firm seeks to meet the needs of today’s clients who are increasingly focused on reducing their environmental impact. As part of this focus the firm is collaborating with a range of institutes and organisations to learn more about how it can incorporate the latest research on sustainable architecture into its projects.
