Architecture Awards 2020
42 2020 Architecture Awards BUILD Jul20625 Best Boutique Interior Design & Styling Firm 2020 - South Africa TASK Interior Styling, founded in 2016 by interior stylist and businesswoman, Mali Langa, is a turn-key award-winning interior design studio born out of a love for beautiful objects, functional design, colour and a flair for luxurious living. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, TASK is dedicated to creating tailored spaces that have an intimate connection to their clients. We spoke to Mali to discuss the growing success of TASK. ASK Interior Styling is a Johannesburg-based, boutique interior firm, dedicated to creating tailored spaces through innovative style choices. Their motto, “innovation through collaboration” drives them as they bring original interior designs, creative projects and products to market. With plans to make TASK a leading authority in interior design on the African continent, founder Mali Langa is passionate about growing her independent company. However, Mali knows the importance of partnership. “My design philosophy revolves around collaboration, not only with clients, but also with other talented creatives from all walks of life. I bring my projects together with an emphasis on luxury, uniqueness and always a pop of colour to excite and bring the design to life.” Inspired by her travels, Mali’s work incorporates styles and cultures from all over the globe into her interiors, then injects an African twist to give it that extra sparkle. Bringing together different materials and colours to create complimenting contrasts, luxurious finishes, varieties in texture, colour and greenery are all signature elements of Mali’s work. For her, there are five pillars that hold up a fabulous interior; lighting, functionality and comfort, balance, quality and colour. At TASK, a client’s tastes and desires are central to the creative process. From the initial consultation, Mali and her team analyse and interpret personalities to establish the perfect design for her clients. From creating the concept to adding the final touches to a finished project, Mali adores every step of the process, and this passion for her work shines through in every project. There have been some recent exciting projects and events for TASK, including the completion of a project in Limpopo, in the region Mali herself grew up in. A favourite project was TASK’s first large residential project, creating a home from what was once simply a large house. Being a family-orientated person herself, Mali was delighted to create a home for a very grateful family. A personal career highlight for Mali took place at the Decorex Design Expo which took place in Johannesburg in 2019, as they blew the competition away, being awarded Best Newcomer as well as Best Décor Stand. They have also recently begun work on a holiday home in Zimbali, Durban and another one in Cape Town. The onset of 2020 marked an expansion of TASK’s Collection & Designs and a strategy to make their original artwork stand out. The idea was to create inspired art that could be pulled T through various aspects of the designs at TASK, whether it be fabric designs, murals, wallpapers, decorative artwork or even fashion. This included the “Graffiti” artwork, that was born out of a collaboration between the TASK graphics department and Serge One to design an artwork which embodied Mali’s love of flowing pops of colour. During a content creation shoot in Cape Town, Serge painted their concept on a wall and captured it at its various stages throughout the day and then reworked digitally to create the final artwork. This piece is now being installed in on- going projects and on pieces and products that are beginning to be introduced to clients. TASK is seeing the influences of the ongoing global health crisis on many of her projects, as people rethink the practicality and aesthetics of their home. The increased demand in home offices presents the challenge of how to create a balance of work and leisure in one space and style choices are seeing an increase in colour and greenery in order to encapsulate positivity amidst the bleakness of the current news and bring the vitality of mother nature indoors whilst outdoor movements are restricted. As Mali and her team continue focusing their efforts towards growing TASK as the leading authority on interior design and styling in South Africa, they are making adjustments to continue thriving. This includes adapting their offering to online shopping for the everyday household, and continuing to travel down the road of interdisciplinary collaborations to see what exciting opportunities will arise from the growing TASK Creative Network. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this ambitious organisation. Contact: Mali Langa Web Address: www.taskinteriorstyling.com
