52 2020 Architecture Awards BUILD Jun20377 Best Turnkey Building Regulations & Planning Practice – London to Leicestershire & Best Grade 2 Listed Building Extension Plan: The Old House tonehouse Architecture don’t just come to a project looking for a quick buck, they always bring a great deal of passion and a large heart. Many people are looking for somewhere that they can make their own, and the team behind Stonehouse Architecture are happy to play a core role in ensuring that they can bring a vision to life. The main work that the team undertakes is for clients in London. This varies from bringing buildings from concept to completion, to handling the technicalities of renovation through to new extensions that make a house into a home. Some of the most interesting work that the team are asked to undertake is with Listed Buildings. The Stonehouse Architecture team’s experience and care for what has gone before has been crucial to this growing trade. It can be difficult to design and complete a project so that an addition feels like it was always there, but the team deliver each and every time. The team take on all the challenges of project paperwork, and are well equipped with how to work with local council authorities to ensure a project can proceed smoothly. Planning, building regulation drawings, new extensions or new house builds that are submitted by Stonehouse Architecture make rapid progress indeed, allowing projects to manifest themselves quickly. The team champion a classic and timeless feel. Some architectural designers look forward to what might be and some turn to the long distant past. These approaches are heavily affected by the trends of today without thought for tomorrow. When involving Stonehouse Architecture in a project, clients know that they will deliver something that will work well for years. Recently, the man behind Stonehouse Architecture, Karl Jenkins, has had to work with a tough customer indeed – his wife! The project revolved around a lovely south-facing Grade 2 listed local stone building with a brick garage, which looked stunning from the outside, but offered those who lived there very little in the way of storage and useful utility. The solution was to combine the garage and the house while also expanding the kitchen. What was a three and a half bedroomed house has become home to five and a half, along with a games room, utility room, boot room, two new toilets and a home office. Alongside the extended S hub of the house kitchen, an enormous transformation has been achieved without losing the attractive outside appearance that originally attracted the couple to the house. In many ways, this decision-making process reflects how Stonehouse Architecture has been able to thrive for so many years. The firm is in constant demand and the team are currently developing a new roof top extension in Kensington soon and a new build locally. Instead of doing exactly what is wanted, the team always make sure that they do what is needed. For them, the act of meeting a brief and a design is a journey to be explored. This process is not easy and takes a great deal of time to get right, but the high calibre of the results speak for themselves. Company: Stonehouse Architecture Ltd Name: Karl Jenkins, MCIAT There are many designers who can take control of a project, bringing years of expertise and knowledge to bear, but it takes a Chartered Architectural Technologist (MCIAT) to manage this sort of work while retaining the original feel of a project. In buildings going from concept to completion, this step makes it a home. For extensions, this approach ties in the new with the old. Stonehouse Architecture Ltd excels at this work. We take a closer look to find out how they do it.
