39 2021 Architecture Awards BUILD Residential Interior Designer of the Year (Portugal): Lígia Casanova The power of good interior design is not often appreciated by those who live within it. The best designs are always subtle in their ability to encourage people to maintain a certain state of mind. We profile the work of Lígia Casanova to see how it has had such an amazing impact on her customers, and how that impact has led to enormous success in BUILD’s Architecture Awards. nterior design is one of those pursuits which is both timely and timeless in its conceptualisation and execution. While customers want their houses to be as relevant as possible to the moment, it’s clear that they want to embrace designs which will endure for months and years at a time. Lígia Casanova has made her name working in this space, offering interior designs that are truly without parallel. Her use of light and shade, to brighten up an environment is second to none and creates spaces that are exemplary in every regard. With a post-graduate degree in Graphic Design, she has an eye for colour and the way in which rooms flow together that is truly astonishing. Her experience comes from many years working with clients and customers at Advertising and Design Agencies such as Abrinício in Lisbon or Wolf Ollins in London. This strong background in discovering what people want and expect I prepared her for the challenges of working as a freelancer in the interior design space. For the last twenty years, she has worked tirelessly to ensure that her designs not only play an important role in people’s lives, but have a specific and effective impact on her customer’s wellbeing. The mantra that pushes her forward everyday is that of “Making spaces that make people happy”. Every decision revolves around this driving force, no matter what the concepts. Over the years, Lígia has been proudly involved in a number of different projects, each very different to the last and able to prove her ability to reach out into new and exciting spaces. Her unique style, built around a light and airy elegance, can be seen both in Portugal and overseas, with private homes, rural tourism, and boutique hotels benefitting from her incredible skill. Wherever she goes, she adds a layer of transcendent beauty that elevates any property to an even higher level. Recently, Lígia has been engaged to work on some stunning tourism projects in the South of Portugal, representing the very heart of the country to visitors with her eye for detail and her incredible ability to breathe life into a space. She has also worked on a family farmhouse in Alentejo and major residential homes in Portugal and Brazil. What is clear from this extraordinary breadth of work is that she is not only in constant demand, but is able to easily change her focus from project to project. The success of Lígia Casanova is not surprising when you look at her amazing track record. She has incredible skill that is of enormous benefit to those who want an interior that stands apart from the crowd. We celebrate her tremendous success in the BUILD Architecture Awards, because her contribution to the industry at large is truly breath-taking. Her work pushes her peers to try new ideas that make people live happier lives, and there’s very little that is better than that.
