Architecture Awards 2023

Architecture Awards 2023 BUILD 27 the industry meant that we have to offer services that are not unique but also cost-efficient. It is important that we ensure every project gets done according to the design intents and this is where our tenacity to ensure that constructability is addressed right at the project onset. Our built works are the best showcase of our work and these must stand the test of time.” In light of all that has been mentioned here, FMK3 Architects will aim to continue to lead future efforts in the sustainable housing sphere, especially in the lower to middle-cost range. Through YY House, the firm has shown that it has the skills, expertise and experience behind it to secure future innovations in the space. “Having proven that a genre like the YY house is possible in the Philippines, the challenge for the firm is to develop a model that would be more adaptable to a greater number of clients. One key to this is to curate building materials and technologies that would make this possible. Market transformation can only be helped by more people talking about and subscribing to this idea – and that’s our goal,” Filemon concludes. FMK3 Architects has thrived through a keen focus on delivering on all expectations, partnered with a honed client-centricity that is bolstered by its determination to remain, in a word, small – despite more than ample opportunity to grow and expand on the back of its many successes. This is absolutely a conscious decision, as Filemon discusses. “We have kept the firm small enough for the Principals to be able to handle every nitty gritty from start to finish. All issues are discussed in studio-style design groups collaborating and learning from each other in the different projects they are handling at every stage of the design. The pandemic has since modified how these design team members have worked together and working remotely from home has allowed us to increase our creativity in solving design problems. Of course, as we go back to normal, we were able to adapt the conveniences of this setup up to a level that let us deliver our best to the clients. Ultimately, the Southeast Asian market has been the perfect location for FMK3, especially in regard to allowing it the freedom to capitalise on global trends in the architecture and construction environment. There’s a thirst there, a need for change and innovation and solutions to prominent problems. “Markets in Southeast Asia are fast moving towards self-realization and despite or maybe because of the openness of the information age, this region will continue to self-determine its trajectory in terms of innovative industry solutions stemming from regional design paradigm and construction methodologies. The only obstacle to producing work that matters might be the idea that generally accepted global trends are a good solution to design problems when professionals should look to innovative solutions close to home. Therefore, it is generally profitable to study these global trends but not force local versions of them. Solutions should stem from the local context and be informed or enhanced by working ideas found elsewhere. FMK3 Architects will continue to think globally but, of course, act locally. “Since starting in 2013 FMK3 Architects has offered a pragmatic approach to Architecture, especially within the wider blanket of the sustainability value proposition.
