We take a closer look after its recent recognition in the Architecture Awards 2023. he most significant and rewarding destinations come with a great deal of challenges that provide knowledge and push past one’s own perception of what is possible. This was the case with the project of Casa Arriba. Transforming an old concreate structure into what you see today was difficult to say the least, and Juan Carlos and his team faced roadblock after roadblock, but nothing stopped them from delivering the incredible villa that sits up on that hill today. Casa Arriba was once an old concrete structure, and it was Juan Carlos and his team that had to decide whether it was best to demolish it or use it for the new house. When they decided to use it, they had to do structural tests to ensure that it was safe build on. The engineers proposed to reinforce the soil, so with some steel cables anchored deep into the soil they injected cement to fill in any spaces and, in addition, they strengthened old columns and designed a new structure for the house you can see now. Choosing against demolishing the old structure saved them from having to start construction 10 meters under street level. The team overcame the obstacles that they came across and made use of what they had to deliver their client the home they had envisioned. The result is breathtaking. As you approach the home you are met by the individualism of the design, its modern detailing and its structure is sharp and clean. When you step in, Juan Carlos implemented a series of spaces to welcome in the natural light while also representing a constant throughout the design – being indoors but feeling the freedom of the outdoors.
