Architecture Awards 2023

BUILD Architecture Awards 2023 32 building by the rooftop soil and transpiration action of the plant. The roof raised like the topography creates various places, a plaza which looks at the Gion festival, roof terrace which becomes a face to face classroom functions as a town’s pocket park. Putting lot of green together make born thre green spaces in the street, and attractiveness required for tenants is obtained. I am hoping that “Midori Building” will become part of the street environment and lead the way of architecture that stands on Shijyo-dori. In 2018, SMA was involved in the design of a high-rise building in Kyoto City, Karuta Hotel. With only a narrow façade facing the street, the building is longer in length than it appears from the front. Eight floors high, the structure is primarily a steel frame with large columns. The arrangement of metal-painted panels that respond to weak light from the east and north at various angles create subtle shifts in appearance depending on the time of day and weather. Additionally, moving up the floors, the guest rooms gradually transition from black to grey to white, which further contributes towards its external appearance. The next year, in 2019, Kinosaki Onsen is famous as 1,300-yearold bath pilgrimage place. So, the entire village was compared to an inn, just as the station was in charge of the front door, the street hallway, the outdoor bath, and the souvenir shop were in charge of the canteen, and the inn was in charge of accommodation for rooms and dining places. However, the recent shortage of manpower in the inn and the diversification of accommodation types due to the increase in foreign tourists have increased the demand for a separation of dining and the inn. TOKIWA GARDEN is a “village dining place” and a new style that was not seen in Kinosaki, where tourists can enjoy BBQ by grilling local ingredients themselves. The site was required to inherit the traditional scenery of Kinosaki and lead future of Kinosaki as supports the new need of separation of dining and the inn. Most recently, in 2022, SMA designed a building for Kyoto Seika University Meisokan. The campus is located in a valley surrounded by the mountains of Iwakura, with buildings scattered along the mountain stream. The new building embodies the university’s revamped image, which it aims to achieve by 2024. It joins the existing Amagaike Pond surrounded by a mortar-shaped plaza, which is the end point of the mountain stream. The art of architecture is not satisfied with the status quo, instead it responds to the ever-changing world. For example, in 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake caused extraordinary damage, prompting the industry to focus on creating spaces that inspire a sense of safety and security. The concept of the environment became a symbol of recovery. Since its inception, SMA has aimed to discover new worlds, environments, and ways of thinking through the art of architecture. It strives to innovate by creating novel concepts and ideas that, while advanced, are simultaneously familiar and easy for people to understand, appealing directly to society. Over the years, SMA has worked on a number of projects, creating buildings that serve a range of different purposes. The firm’s website homepage boasts a plethora of images, exhibiting its diverse portfolio and broad capabilities. Shortly after laying its foundation, in 2008, SMA designed a comfortable and safe nursery school in Fukushima, Japan. The nursery features an atrium at its centre, which allows the line of sight to pass seamlessly through the space, creating a sense of unity and togetherness. A skylight and natural ventilation windows were added to the upper part of the atrium to allow light and wind to pass through. The building was designed to buffer noise from a nearby road that is frequently occupied by heavy traffic. With access and safety in mind, a secure and spacious playground is positioned on the south side. In 2012, SMA faced the problem Shijyo-dori where had characteristic pocket park walking space without tree planting. Shijyo-dori is required the suitable planning for the main street of Kyoto’s commercial and business district. So SMA thought “wearing green” architecture to guide the new landscape standards in Shijyo-dori. Plants change every season as a group, they constitute calm and textured walls. Unlike signs strictly regulated by ordinance, greening never makes a strong claim. Greenery naturally gives you attractive attention to Shijyo Street tenant building, attracting people naturally. This green attractiveness was verified using a line of vision measuring device. Overall greening of the rooftop leads the greening of the greenable area facing the street and suppresses the heat island phenomenon by energy saving of the Based in Japan and Korea, Shinsaku Munemoto and Associates (SMA) is an architecture firm that uses the logic of engineering in combination with the technology of construction to create rich living spaces that appeal to human sensibilities.
