Essentially, the client was seeking a bold, geometric home that would stand as the pinnacle of modern architecture both inside and out. Creating a spatial experience was to be a common thread throughout the home’s design – inclusive of room for a ballet studio and gym – and thus Dawn and her team got to work developing a concept that wouldn’t only live up to their wishes but exceed their expectations. From the initial sketch, it was clear that Dawn had homed in on even the tiniest of ideas proposed and went above and beyond to seamlessly integrate them. This starting point began with the conceptual main and guest house floor plan. Every aspect – from the main house being positioned to take advantage of southern exposure for consistent natural light, to the guest house being designed to block harsh western exposure – not only considered what the client wanted but built upon it. Throughout this plan, Dawn remained mindful of just how essential natural light is to enhancing modern builds, and therefore designed a layout that would maximize beneficial light, while blocking out harsh, disruptive light. As such, Dawn created mindful floorplans that captured her sheer breadth of experience, all while masterfully paying homage to the client’s initial ideas. From the outline of the floorplans, to the conceptual design of the guest house’s elevation, Dawn took every factor into account during the planning process. In fact, this eye for detail further extended to the site plan, wherein the firm considered the location of the home in order to cultivate a design that mingled with the surrounding area. Planned for construction in Sanford – a traditional North Carolina neighborhood – the house needed to combine privacy and distance to uphold the pre-existing atmosphere of the area. In the end, Dawn overcame this obstacle, placing the planned property on a secluded section of hillside. As such, not only was the natural environment protected, but the privacy of the residents would be upheld too. Once all of these factors had been decided upon, it was time for Dawn and her team to draft up how to use the space in a way that was both inventive and aligned with the effect the client was hoping to achieve. At its core, the property needed to capture a sense of grandiose spaciousness – a challenge that Dawn eagerly rose to. Equipped with her vision and creativity, she thoughtfully combined the concept of an open plan with varying ceiling heights to encourage a sense of scale between rooms. This ultimately means that, when constructed, the home will possess an impression of spatial exploration – a dynamic aspect topped with artistic lighting fixtures and ambient details. Additionally, Dawn Christine, Architect PLLC takes the use of different materials very seriously. It has long since identified the impact of various colors, textures, and finishes on a completed space, and therefore integrated a myriad of options throughout the home. For instance, the kitchen has been designed to include top class white and grey granite with mingling elements, while the Great Room seeks to boast an 8ft linear fireplace complete with textured plaster. Partnered with the careful consideration that’s gone into how various planes coincide with one another, Dawn has crafted a spectacular blend of styles and materials to truly elevate the sense of open space throughout the home. However, the spectacle of the Great Room doesn’t end there. Extending from this space is both a spatial and functional feature of the Great Room – the ethereal stair. Noted as a collage of art, with various dramatic architectural elements bouncing off one another, this area provides natural light and artistic elegance in abundance. Complete with a wine display and a space specifically carved out for the family’s baby grand piano, this particular segment of the room brings attention to the modern sophistication of the build, while simultaneously elevating the ambience of the room itself. Presented as such a simple yet effective space, this element of the Great Room demonstrates every aspect that makes Dawn Christine, Architect PLLC truly unique. Though the floorplan includes at least five bedrooms, one standout is easily the Master Bedroom. Between its linear elements and walk in closet, this room has been carefully designed to elicit a sense of rest and relaxation within its dwellers. Dawn has quite clearly mastered the art of designing rooms that seamlessly adhere to their intended purposes, and the Master Bedroom is no different. Similarly to the house’s other rooms, this space is clean, precise, and mapped out to perfection, allowing for an enhanced level of luxury that’s only further emphasized by the secluded patio. Every aspect of the Master Bedroom captures elegant serenity, and it’s a treat to see such an environment fully realized in 3D. Furthermore, turning back the clock of evolution, this single cell organism shows the most primitive life form – ‘MEMBRANE’, which skin and bones are as one. Inspired by protozoa, we explore the architecture of membrane – BRANE Architecture. Our new concept of BRANE Architecture is a manifestation of the Five Points of BRANE Architecture: 1. Skin and bones are as one 2. Ultra-lightweight 3. Unified elements of construction 4. Unified construction material 5. Interactive and responsive envelope Facing climate change, over population, pollution, we need new ways of using less to achieve more. BRANE Architecture, with membrane as the essential material, has the potential of adaptability to changes. Its fluidity in form and space, and the glow and float properties will generate new architectural expressions. Membrane will have unlimited possibilities in the future. With the advancement in nanotechnology and interactive materials, membranes with new properties will become information interactive skins for buildings, and an energy source using solar power. We envision a future story of BRANE Architecture where Hong Kong would emerge as a marvel of futuristic architecture. It was a city where the concept of "skin and bones as one" had become the hallmark of its unique building designs. The innovative practice has become an international office with projects across Greece and beyond. Most recently, ASPA KST began a new project, the Interbalkan Medical Centre in Thessaloniki, Greece. The new building will become the Oncology Centre, designed specifically to complement the existing hospital while having the least possible environmental impact. It will relate to the main curve of the older structures in plan and provide a bright and inclusive environment for patients. Tina Tsagkaratou, Design Director, shares, “What we are most proud of was also the biggest challenge we faced. The question was how to design the cancer treatment areas in a way that would minimise the discomfort that patients feel. We created a new approach to these spaces by removing the hospital curtains and replacing them with warm, friendly spaces with hotel aesthetics. 19 the patients from each other with two rows of wooden louvers which are high enough to ensure privacy but not ceiling high, to avoid feelings of isolation and enclosure. This resulted in cosy cocoons with warm colours and soft curves.” At ASPA KST, every project is assigned to one or two lead architects who are responsible for the project, team, and coordination with the collaborators from beginning to end. The practice boasts four talented directors who are each in charge of a specific area. Spyros Tsagkaratos is the company’s Managing Director who oversees the entire office. Tina Tsagkaratou is the Design Director whose role is ensuring the quality of projects from the early to late design stages. At this year’s Architecture Awards, ASPA KST has been awarded Most Innovative Office Building Construction Project (South Europe): Kaizen Campus. The Kaizen Campus in Greece is the first office premises of its kind to reflect the country’s current cultural shift through architecture. The project architects, Spyros Tsagkaratos and Zozo Koutsanellou employed a unique research method that centred around collaboration, focus, inclusivity, learning, rejuvenation, and socialisation. To translate these pillars into functional designs, the architects took the time to understand the brand culture, discuss team members’ needs, and divide the project into mind map sections. As a result, the campus has been specifically tailored to meet the individual needs of each company department. Kaizen Campus was designed in accordance with the international LEED certification system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and achieved a GOLD level for sustainable development. The distinctive building is the first in Greece to achieve WELL certification, which focuses in on being a space for partnership, inclusivity, and socialisation for employees by integrating leading research into its design, construction, and operation. Kaizen Campus features exterior ramps that connect the different floors, the big public atrium/courtyard in the centre that connects all the departments and can host social events and the double height spaces with interior balconies that allow for visual connectivity and encourage socialization. Kaizen Campus’ revolutionary design truly demonstrates how architecture has the power to shape people’s experiences and impact the health and wellbeing of individuals and businesses. Tina Tsagkaratou says, “We believe that both the built and the natural environment play an important role in the user experience. That is why we try to design spaces that are aesthetically pleasing with natural light, ventilation, and good microclimates. We are committed to designing sustainable buildings with minimum impact to the environment. We have successfully completed multiple buildings with LEED certification, and more are in the works.” This year, ASPA KST is set to complete two large scale buildings, one hospital and one office building, and begin construction on four more projects. Over the latter half of 2024, the practice will focus on object design and will be launching a series of 3D printed objects such as vases, candelabras, and tables. Moving forward, the practice will expand its online presence to engage with more clients and looks forward to completing more international projects.
