Architecture Awards 2024

BUILD Architecture Awards 2024 Best Full-Service Architecture & Interior Design Firm 2024 - Bahrain Founded by Principal Architect and Director Marwan Lockman, S/L Architect strikes a masterful balance between fulfilling the exact needs of its clients and leaving minimal ecological footprint with each project it undertakes. The architectural firm manages residential, commercial, and special projects from the design’s conception to the project’s completion, ensuring that only the highest quality of work is being produced. With a team of highly trained professionals, S/L Architects is able to undertake complex projects that meld form and function beautifully together. The firm recognises that clients should not sacrifice aesthetics for functionality and strives to produce all-encompassing designs that is both luxurious and entirely functional. S/L Architects takes a unique approach to its designing methodologies. Rather than focusing solely on the structure and appearance of the building itself, the company continually considers the project’s landscape and environment as well. “We endeavour to develop unique custom designs that appropriately capture the sense of site, location, and culture while innovating the concept, with the aim of achieving a new vernacular that moves the architectural conversation forward and garners us the reputation of having the zeal to be part of a movement that pushes the envelope in the region,” Marwan tells us. This mission was especially prominent in the development of S/L Architects’ recently completed project, the Al Dana Amphitheatre. The Amphitheatre is located within the Sakhir desert and is a prominent venue for touring artists visiting Bahrain. S/L Architects aimed to maintain the natural landscape surrounding the Amphitheatre, making it seem as if the structure had always been in the desert. This was achieved through essentially inserting the amphitheatre into the quarry and using recycled materials wherever possible, including quarried rock sheet piles, shipping containers, and utilising raw concrete, recycled rubber flooring, and epoxy coatings instead of tiling and painting. “Form and function should be joined in a spiritual union. Respecting the nature of the surroundings, the nature of the location’s individual characteristics, such as sun paths, shadows, wind direction, and terrain. This is what ultimately evokes the strongest bond to nature, allowing the Amphitheatre to be part of its existence, organic and everlasting. The materials and technologies chosen were done so to compliment this theme, allowing for a low-impact footprint, and meeting our recycling and re-use objectives,” Marwan reflects. No matter the project, S/L Architects will always strive to ensure that it is operating as economically responsible as possible, for its client and the environment. Projects are designed to meet the financial needs of clients as well as having insignificant impact on the environment through the use of recycled and reused materials. Marwan tells us, “Our mission is to deliver our services imbued with our philosophy to the highest degree of professionalism with a pragmatic approach that is economically viable for our clients. Economy of means and materials, combined with the respect that should be afforded to the surrounding nature, while introducing where possible the concepts of recycling and sustainability to decrease the ecological footprint of the projects that we create.” This mission will continue through 2024, as Marwan tells us that the firm has several exciting projects lined up.
