One of his most recent projects, the Villa Borderline, reflects this choice exactly. The villa complements the natural landscape as well as the temperament of its owners. Through prior conversations, Allem discovered that the villa’s owners enjoyed art, travelling, and debating. He envisioned a magnificent home, full of open spaces designed for communication and relaxation. Villa Borderline is situated close to the Grand Cul-de-Sac beach, overlooking the stunning lagoon. The villa sits on a 1800m2 land between a small cliff and the roadside, with the sea to its side. The villa consists of a luxurious main house, overlooking the road and lagoon, as well as a smaller, Creole wooden guest house set further back. The outdoor area features a pétanque court, wooden deck, and a raised Balinese pool, the perfect combination for any host wanting to entertain. The pool is slightly raised to match the height of the living room so that conversation can flow, and the extraordinary views are available all around. Blending such remarkable functionality with the aesthetic requirements of both the client and the island is no easy feat, though a creative visionary such as Allem rises to the challenge. The client wished for the architecture to merge seamlessly into the landscape, which aligns perfectly with Allem’s reverence for the surrounding environment. Villa Borderline was constructed using mostly natural materials that make the villa appear as an extension of the stunning scenery of St Barthélemy. High quality wood and stones sourced from excavations make up the exterior of the villa, further emulating the natural beauty of the island. Materials must be imported to the island, and only the highest quality is carefully selected for its clients.
