BUILD Construction and Engineering Awards 2021 14 Jul21326 efore creating the Wondercap USA Inc. and the Wondercap Company, Les Howson (founder and CEO) operated a well-respected plumbing company on the Gold Coast, Australia since 1980. After many years of witnessing inadequate installation standards for floor and shower drains which resulted in regular downtime and call- backs, Les’ vision came to life to remedy these unnecessary expenses by developing the Wondercap. The award-winning and patented product features a 4” chrome brass strainer with a simple turn-lock mechanism for easy access, a 4” protective cap to stop cement and grout from entering the drainage system, a reducing bush that is used for linear drain connection, a 4” x 3” base for users to adjust to required bedding heights, and a 3” test plug that is used for flood testing. Les replaced the traditional design bolted mechanical flanged system that has caused more problems than what they are supposed to solve! By removing the under- pan liner blind sealed connection, Les was able to remedy the issues that have plagued the shower pan liner industry for years. Les created a simple triple seal connection for all shower pan linings so that they were able to seal liners in three positions. The first position prevents the water from the drain from getting in between the shower pan linings. The second seal sealed the underside of the pan liner and the third seal sealed the top side of the shower pan liner. It entered the United States market in 2017 after recognising that its product/s help eliminate the same problems faced by the Australian market. Although Australia and the United States face the same problems, each country’s shower drains are completely different in design and installation. The company redesigned the patented and revolutionary product to meet the needs of the United States construction industry and the different methods of waterproofing. B
