Construction and Engineering Awards 2021

Construction and Engineering Awards 2021 BUILD 71 Jun21770 ince the Grenfell fire and subsequent Hackitt report, there has been huge scrutiny on the fire safety industry and how fire safety is dealt with by developers, property owners, construction companies and installers. The legislation that governs the fire safety industry is also under scrutiny and something that was once considered a minor package within a construction project, is now a serious life safety issue. CLM’s clients now recognise early on that to deliver fully compliant fire safety solutions on a project, they must revise how fireproofing is procured and select a strategic fireproofing partner to deliver an enhanced and compliant service for their clients, a partner that is involved with an early engagement on the project and undertakes all fireproofing works to provide a single point of responsibility. Founder and CEO, Clive Miles has long championed change in the fire safety industry. He pioneered early engagement with tier 1 contractors, with his 7-stage implementation lifecycle ensuring effective installations and involving producing a suite of tested solutions for the firestopping of service penetrations. The early engagement process is utilised on projects and involves producing a suite of tested solutions for all the firestopping of service penetrations throughout the company’s projects. The programme is employed to bring together key trades ahead of construction to agree roles, responsibilities and requirements for effective operations. This phase is also utilised to scrutinise and clarify the firestopping scope of works package and certify that tested solutions are designed and installed as tested, using cost-efficient products and systems. CLM Fireproofing has 4 values which are integral to its service mission. These are: • ‘client focus and value’ by upholding high standards of craftmanship and customer service • ‘compliance first’ which focuses on health and safety standards, and it also uses BORIS to keep in-depth records of all work undertaken • ‘creating opportunity’ by identifying areas for improvement and introducing new technologies to simplify key processes • taking ‘pride’ in all work. By adhering to its values, the company is able to choose which projects it undertakes and which vendors it collaborates with, and its team can be confident that their work is of a consistent, exemplary standard. Moreover, CLM’s values enable it to pursue continual improvement, making processes simpler and more affordable without sacrificing quality. A recently notable project of CLM’s is Battersea Power Station, a former industrial site in the midst of one of the largest redevelopment projects in Europe. Spanning over 8 million sq ft, this project culminated in the creation of a vibrant mixed-use development, giving London residents an exciting new neighbourhood and business quarter. The importance of this project was apparent from the very start. Battersea Power Station is a prestigious building, meaning that the redevelopment would be high-profile and therefore subject to significant scrutiny In October 2018, CLM was appointed by two separate contractors for its expertise in intumescent paint application. One of the main requirements was that the paint had to be applied with a high decorative finish. CLM was also contacted for specialist grit blasting so that surfaces were fully prepared for the intumescent paint. Its team had the unique challenge of working with two clients simultaneously, balancing their respective requirements whilst still offering a high quality of service. In terms of practicality and risk, Battersea Power Station was a large-scale and aged industrial building. As this posed several distinct hazards, such as the building previously being painted with lead-based paint, regular planning meetings were held to ensure the project was delivered safely and effectively. To mitigate risks associated with lead-based paint, its team used a vapour blasting technique commonly used in asbestos works to suppress the dust in the atmosphere. This allowed other teams to work closer to where grit blasting works were taking place, which ultimately sped up the construction process for its clients. CLM is pioneering change in the passive fire protection industry – driving greater levels of quality, compliance and safety through the use of technology, subject expertise and innovation.
