Construction & Engineering Awards 2023

13 Established in 1990 on the back of core values that remain firmly in place to this very day, Synergy Modular is considered a trailblazer and stalwart of an industry that continues to evolve and develop. With a long, storied history of success, few can match the pace of Synergy and its expertise. We spoke with CEO, Justin Stewart to find out more following the company’s recognition in the awards programme. It’s a common statement in modern business to say that a company is driven by its values. Or that a company is ethical or sustainable, and aims towards that at every opportunity, decision, and development. It’s one of those things that is easy to state, but far harder to ensure consistency and adherence – especially in this challenging professional climate defined more by uncertainty than anything else. It is some testament, then, that Synergy remains dedicated to its values, even over some 30 years of an often-tumultuous industry and landscape. For Justin, these values have been the source of the company’s enduring success and growth. Since 1990, the business has grown massively, with the largest expansion arriving in 2017 which saw the launch of ‘Synergy Modular’ based out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Here, in his opening comments, Justin touches on the ‘early days’ of the business before discussing what the current Synergy now looks like. “Since establishing Synergy as a familyowned general contractor in the Seattle area in 1990, the company emphasised integrity and transparency, underscoring the importance of long-term relationships over short term profits. Relationships and commitment to community were the inspiration to expand the business in 2017 and launch Synergy Modular based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Since then, Synergy has worked for clients across the western US including Washington, Arizona, California, Texas, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. We remain committed to our core values of doing the right thing, innovation, massive action, personal development, transparency, and winning.” Let’s look at those core values more closely, seeing as they have proved such a prominent tool in accelerating Synergy’s enduring success. These values, as Justin continues, are vital pillars of Synergy and its operations. “We have six pillars that are crucial to how Synergy operates today. Those are: Integrity, Honesty, Attention to Detail, Empowering our Employees, An Innovative and Creative Culture, and, simply, Rewarding a Job Well Done”. As simple as those may be from the outset, these values have proven themselves to be a potent combination when utilised and harnessed by Synergy’s leadership and greater team. As it stands, the company culture is one that drives all employees to do their best work, all while acting to reinforce their position as exemplars of the industry within their work. This industry is demanding, in that it requires a consistent ability to match pace with often unpredictable changes, not least of which – most recently – has been the national housing crisis. Where it has enormously impacted a variety of industries, it would be fair to say it has struck the construction sector most, with rippling effects across most, if not all, markets. Here, Synergy has positioned itself as a results-driven provider of solutions, with a focus on delivery of cost-effective products, as Justin continues. “Synergy remains dedicated and focused on providing solutions to the housing crisis. A majority of our projects are multifamily with an emphasis on workforce and affordable housing. We also provide pre-construction and construction management services for all market rate multifamily projects, mixed use, office, retail, and hospitality.” When it comes to recent projects in this vein, Synergy has recently taken on a $50m renovation project in Sunnyvale, California for a UK-based hospitality company. As it happened, the previous collaborator had dropped out, and Synergy were onboarded to pick up where the previous company left off. “This project was started by another GC and our team came in and worked with the client to move it forward. The 254-room hotel is on track to be the first hotel by Tree House Hotels in North America. We’re proud to be a part of it.” But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Synergy and its future plans – all of which, it should go without saying, revolve around an adherence to its foundational pillars. “We remain focused on our core values and the importance of teamwork. Our core values and dedication to transparency set us apart from the competition.” Other than that, the plan remains much of the same as it was in 2017 – expansion and growth into new areas and markets. Specifically, as Justin iterates in his closing comments, across the Western USA, with special attention being drawn to forging new partnerships and collaborations with established entities in that region. Being ‘Most Dedicated’ may seem like a hardto-quantify title, but with regard to Synergy it is easy to see why they have been recognised for such an achievement. Its founding values have proven to be a vital cornerstone for the entire business to be built upon and thrive on the back of. As the Construction and Engineering Awards’ Most Dedicated Modular Construction Management Company for 2023 in the USA, Synergy has attained a position that few can match on the greater construction landscape. This is made all the more impressive when you consider the company’s longevity in the space, and its ability to maintain ‘small business’ family values at scale. That, ultimately, speaks volumes on the leadership’s ability to weather storms and overcome challenges, especially important in this current climate and greater market. A well-deserved recognition by every consideration, with a future defined only by further growth and success.
