Construction and Engineering Awards 2020

BUILD Construction & Engineering Awards 2020 Construction & Engineering Awards 2020 BUILD 12 13 CLM Fireproofing’s innovative fire and insulation solutions were used on a number of floors to increase the fire resistance. The team also installed all the fire breaks to the external cladding, ensuring a fully compliant building. The benefits of early engagement in all projects is that the team are not on the back-foot attempting to produce technical evaluations rather than being able to provide tested solutions. The implementation lifecycle explains this further. The team have been proud to work on numerous properties through London. Indeed, CLM Fireproofing were honoured to be part of The Shard’s fire protection infrastructure. More specifically, they supplied firestopping for all of the service penetrations throughout the building. ‘Service penetrations’ refers to how cables, wires, and other services can potentially compromise any compartmentation – a key part of any passive fire protection system. To ensure the highest level of protection, all service penetrations must be audited and firestopped where appropriate. There are multiple important factors to consider when firestopping service penetrations. Each potential breach was thoroughly reviewed, with the most intricate of details accounted for. Following this review, the team swiftly rectified all identified service penetrations. Residents and business owners alike can now be assured that this landmark building is 100% compliant with the latest fire safety regulations. As well as this, with The Shard being the height that it is the team had to account for a certain amount of deflection allowance. To mitigate any impact on firestopping, CLM Fireproofing engaged with the building’s design team at the beginning of the project. Similarly, the work that the business undertook at The Madison is worthy of praise. Designed by the award-winning Make Architects, The Madison is a 53-story tower situated in Canary Wharf. This high-rise building features a range of luxurious living spaces, offering residents panoramic views of the River Thames. In November 2019, CLM Fireproofing were commissioned by Balfour Beatty to install fireproofing for all The Madison’s luxury apartments. The goal was to provide fireproofing services both quickly and effectively, in adherence to project timescales and industry best practice. A significant amount of The Madison’s components were modular, and this presented unique challenges that the team were able to successfully navigate. An on-site team of operatives completed the work promptly, whilst remaining 100% compliant with industry health and safety standards. CLM Fireproofing were recognised for the quality of its work by third-party vendors and regulatory bodies. During the project, The Madison was inspected by the National House-Building Council (NHBC). Alongside the Balfour Beatty team, the firm was commended for its top-quality level of workmanship and record production. Furthermore, as the team began working on The Madison the building was visited by FSi, a manufacturer of firestopping and compartmentation systems. FSi regularly works with CLM Fireproofing as technical advisors. Not only did they describe the compound install as ‘the best they’ve ever seen’, but they also took photos to use as examples in their upcoming training presentations! The last few years have inspired many to pay more attention to the value of fire proofing. Indeed, since the Grenfell fire and subsequent Hackitt report, there has been huge scrutiny on the fire safety industry and how fire safety is dealt with by developers, property owners, construction companies and installers. The legislation that governs the fire safety industry is also under scrutiny and something that was once considered a minor package within a construction project, is now a serious life safety issue. It is essential that developers, property owners and construction companies form strategic partnerships who have the experience, technical expertise, pride and commitment to constantly, advise, safeguard and deliver best in class compliant fire protection on all projects. With these challenges in mind, the team have made the decision to continuously develop the services that CLM Fireproofing offers, finding new ways of delivering cost efficiency, sustainability, innovation and technological advancements. The importance of investing in new technologies and adapting in an ever changing digital world cannot be understated, and the team are currently exploring methods to amalgamate Boris (the firm’s proprietary electronic recording, quality control and compliance management system) with Idea Drop – a market leading software that captures, curates and actions the best ideas from across workforces. While technology continues to grow and develop, the future of CLM Fireproofing is its people. The team will strengthen itself with the addition of the highest quality that will provide invaluable new ideas, innovation and solutions for the firm’s future.
