10 BUILD Design and Build 2020 Feb20099 BUILD Q2 2020 24 Feb20099 years ago Douglas Whitneybell “unexpectedly” founded the company. “It all began during the 1975-76 economic slowdown – basically I needed a job! So I rented a one room office for $50.00 a month, including utilities, then hired Vince the best draftsman in the world. The phone started ringing. I paid every bill the day I got it as I was simply terrified I would fall behind, run out of money and be in debt for the rest of my life. The mission was simple - stay in business! It took a while but that insecurity sort of subsided.” “Today, we are thriving under the ethos - we are not designers of monuments to us, we design places where people love to live.” “Clients and product have changed,” “Forty years ago the multifamily design/build team and process was pretty wild and woolly. Actually it was even more fun than now! It’s still fun, but drawings have increased from about 12 to 20 sheets of hand drawn architectural to 160 or more sheets of architectural computer, plus 80 pages of consultant drawings. “Clients have grown in sophistication and cities are much more involved. Computers were supposed to speed up the drawing process, but that windfall was quickly used up. The end results are actually very favorable with a substantial increase in apartment home quality and environment.” “We strive to stay ahead of the game.” “There are lots of worthy competitors out there,” he says. “We try to stay at the forefront of constantly evolving design of high density housing. Project construction of our designs is not by competitive bidding general contractors but is a team approach including the general contractor who is selected early by negotiation.” Whitneybell Perry is active in Arizona and New Mexico with occasional projects in Texas, Nevada and California. It has two offices, one in Phoenix and one in Chandler. Despite the 26 mile gap the two offices work as one, united through the common interests of diligence and accomplishment. The firm promotes an office culture of professionalism in its project communication and design – including community professional involvement such as membership on a local government planning committee to personal involvement such as coaching a child’s sports team. From Humble Beginnings to Decades of Success Whitneybell Perry Architects is a Phoenix, Arizona-based firm specializing in stylish and sustainable multi-family residential and commercial architectural services. Douglas Whitneybell, the firm’s founder, tells us more about the company in the wake of being awarded the accolade of Outstanding Architecture & Planning Firm 2020 - Arizona & New Mexico. 44 Doug and partner, Mike, always the importance of working hard during the 40 hour work week and then making personal time for extra-curricular activities. They lead by example in promoting the importance of architects being involved in their communities – join a city group such as a planning committee, join professional organizations such as AIA, Valley Partnership, etc. and get involved in the meetings and missions of these organizations. Doug and Mike believe that they have a responsibility to the community around them and have led by example in their community activities. “The lake we play in would be a lot smaller without this many paddlers,” states Douglas, speaking of his dedicated employees and the firm’s internal culture. “With many talented people comes a much appreciated expansion of technical resources, talent and knowledge.” The Whitneybell Perry team is actively encouraged to participate in community activities following Douglas and Mike’s lead. They have memberships in the local American Institute of Architects chapter, United States Green Building Council chapter and the International Code Council. In 2002, Doug was the recipient of The Arizona Architects Medal which recognized his accomplishments that have made a significant impact on the profession of architecture and upon society. His efforts in Whitneybell Perry’s annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot were recognised in 2002 when he was given the Mountain States Region Award for Outstanding Community Service in Raising Funds. The 40 year old event has recieved $665,000 in donations of which every penny went to Arizona Diabetic Children. In addition, Doug has served in many local organizations such as the Arizona Trail Association and PRIDE (Phoenix Residential Incentive Development Effort) Mike has dedicated much of his time to volunteering on local Planning and Zoning Commissions. He is a past chairman of the Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission and is a past member of the Queen Creek Planning Commission. Additionally, he is a member of the San Tan Historical Society and a member of the Town of Queen Creek Library Design Committee.

11 Design and Build 2020 BUILD Q2 2020 BUILD 25 In addition to team-building efforts during business hours, there are several WPI sponsored events scheduled outside of the office – trip to Havasupai Falls, the Turkey Trot, hiking the Arizona Trail and WPI “Night at the Movies”. Finally, the office culture embraces the idea that architecture is more than just a job – it is a professional career that requires dedication, perseverance, responsibility and community involvement. “At Whitneybell Perry Architects, we have created a strong team within our firm which results in multiple members working effectively on projects together,” enthuses Doug. “In addition, those of us that choose this for our career also find that it is a lot of fun!” “LIVE – WORK – DREAM TO ENRICH LIFE”

12 BUILD Design and Build 2020 Feb20019 9 Q3 2020 BUILD Feb20019 Remarkable Residential Architecture Architecture and design is an often overlooked art form by many. Where some people see buildings and houses, architecture firms and their teams see a myriad of shapes and movements, each part linking together seamlessly for a powerful or subtle effect. Residential architecture and design in particular, is a speciality of Ukrainian firm, KYB Architects. The firm was recognised in BUILD’s Design and Build Awards 2020, with the title of Specialists in Residential Design: “Private Houses” in Ukraine – 2020, so we took a closer look at its work to learn more about why. KYB Architects is a dynamic team of young, but experienced professionals that are wholly focused on designing and executing exceptional works of residential architecture. In a very short time, KYB Architects was able to establish itself as an architecture and design firm that creates an impeccably high standard and quality of product, erasing the verge of banal approaches that other competing firms have brought to the table before. Despite its youth, KYB Architects continues to grow and develop, setting new standards and benchmarks along the way for the entire field of architecture and design. One of the firm’s most recent works, which showcases both its ambition and its drive to succeed, is Dibrova Park, on the north side of Kyiv. Designed to be a green oasis in the north of the city, Dibrova Park is a residential complex that boasts an excellent architectural structure and a plethora of aspects that have all been implemented for the residents’ use. The site on which the residential complex will be located is bordered by the large Syretskiy arboretum, which is more than two centuries old. Dibrova Park is more of an open living space, with a green zone occupying just over three hectares in the centre of complex. The concept of the central courtyard green zone contains the idea of a large tree, and a divergent path which stretches into different directions and areas of the complex. Each path leads to areas such as sports playgrounds, recreational areas, promenades, and shopping facilities. As for the specifics of the green zone of Dibrova Park, KYB Architects have designed the complex to serve the people living there. With eight playgrounds equipped with modern equipment, two sports playing fields, amphitheatre alleys, 1200 meters of bike lanes, two shopping centres, and four parking lots, there is plenty to see and do for the residents of Dibrova Park. Additionally, the architecture of the complex as a whole resembles an open book, unfolded to each of its own areas so that windows from residential towers can maximize the views. Each part of the residential design has a different surface and architecture, which in turn shapes the image and emphasizes the uniqueness of the whole complex itself. These residential architecture ambitions and dreams that KYB Architects has helped to realise have come about because it, as a firm, is constantly striving to design special places that stimulate architectural change. Since its formation, KYB Architects has sought to always hear the customer before proposing solutions that meet their wishes. In meeting those wishes, the firm is not afraid to beyond the existing frameworks, and be super creative with its work. Constantly improving their skills, the designers and architects that work at KYB Architects work hard to project the future, and bring about lasting residential change that will still inspire people well into the years to come. Every single project that KYB Architects undertakes begins with the development of a concept. From there, that concept then forms the basis for the subsequent work of architects and designers. V Architecture has become a staple among local industry leaders and an advocate for style, function, and sustainability through innovative technology, efficient collaboration, and forward-thinking design. V Architecture was founded 40 years ago as Jiménez + Rodríguez Barceló, thanks to the bold vision of its founding partners Ricardo Jiménez and José Rodríguez Barceló. The namesake duo was a big part of some of the most significant local ventures in hospitality, commercial projects, and the world-famous Puerto Rico Convention Center. “It’s extremely exciting to have been a part of the Convention Center - a giant leap in the development of Puerto Rico and its tourism - and to now celebrate its 15 years with the Distrito San Juan grand opening,” explains Ríos. 16 BUILD Design and Build 2020 Feb20096 26 BUILD Q1 2021 Feb20096 here is an art and skill behind creating good buildings that fit in with our lives and emerging environmental changes; but many families and companies don’t realise this until they try to do it themselves. At André Rösch Architekt, or ARA, a small team of highly-skilled professionals are thinking outside of the box to create homes, offices and tailored spaces that are adapting to everything from global warning and limited land to cleverly planned interiors for a new minimalistic generation. André Rösch, founder and owner of the young, multidisciplinary architecture firm, explains: “Architects have big responsibilities, they need to be visionaries and evolve to the needs of their clients. How we want and need to live determines the design of our buildings. “People don’t understand what architects really do and what hard work stands behind a good design. As building costs are rising, people want to save on architectural fees and try to do certain architectural stages themselves - until they realise how difficult it is. To create something special is more important for us than making money” adds André. Working in all stages of architecture, from the initial design to final building construction, ARA’s range of small and large projects are serving everyone from young families to public institutions and churches. The company’s work is getting noticed too with ARA gaining recognition in Germany among the Best Houses of the Year in 2019, at the “Häuser des Jahres” awards run by Callwey Verlag. There is a passion for design at ARA and despite being a small company, it prides itself on big ideas. The elite team of architects apply new building methods and functional floor plan layouts along with incorporating sustainable energy using less recourses. “We start on a new page away from traditional conservative building methods; thinking outside the box,” says André with pride. “ARA employs dedicated, passionate and talented designers with the ability to work holistically as every project requires an individual, customised approach. We want to stay small to be able to provide the highest quality,” emphasises André. Adapting to latest trends, ARA has been quick to adjust its building designs to the way people want to live. This ranges from finding cost-effective ways to build amid a backdrop of Breaking Tradition Responding to changing environmental issues and client demands, André Rösch Architekt is a design firm passionate about quality and new ideas. We spoke to the company’s owner André Rösch. T rising building costs and land to develop on becoming increasingly scarce. New environmentally-friendly measures by ARA has seen its small new-build family homes include self-sufficient passive houses, green rooves and rainwater tanks that are used for toilets and washing machines. Cross laminated timber or nailed-laminated timber walls are also used for ceilings and roofs, insulation is made from natural wood fibre insulation boards or recycled insulation boards and foundations are made with ground screws, which don’t scar nature and are demountable along with cost efficient. There’s plenty more to keep the architects busy with new design ideas with a generation emerging that has a mindset of minimalism and living in a compact way. André explains that this means having to cleverly plan interiors, like micro apartments, which can use built-in wardrobes to create new space, such as for a guest room. “People want to live healthy, environmentally-friendly lives with ecological building products,” adds André. “While global warming is seeing summers getting hotter, so there needs to be protection not only against the cold but also against the heat in the summertime.” Then there is the rising popularity of prefabricated, transportable homes and the effect of Coronavirus on private, public and workplace lives that will have an impact on future architectural design process. But for André and the ARA architects, the focus remains the same - “It’s about creating quality instead of quantity.” Company: André Rösch Architekt Name: André Rösch Website: www.andreroesch.com
