7 2020 Home And Garden Awards BUILD Jan20175 Most Luxurious Residential Design Firm – London In the wake of G-Something Interiors being named Most Luxurious Residential Design Firm – London, we speak to Martyn Gayle, one of the company’s two founders, about the firm’s passion for maintaining a building’s integrity. -Something is a London based design and build company dedicated to creating beautiful residencies and commercial spaces. Founded by Joelle Talmasse and Martyn Gayle, whose approach is defined by their vision and straightforward design concepts, each project clearly shows G-Something’s basic principles with regard to scale and quality, and the attitude of maintaining integrity and honesty within each space. “G-Something Interiors designs, builds and creates unique interiors designed with our clients’ individuality in mind,” explains Martyn Gayle. “The firm’s overall philosophy is to create unique spaces with personality and individuality, whilst achieving the utmost satisfaction for its clients.” Martyn goes into further detail on the type of projects undertaken and clients involved. “Being based in London, and in the high- end sector of the interior’s industry, it is highly competitive, and even at this level costs are key. When clients are purchasing properties in excess of £5 million, they still expect value for money. We think the most key development in our sector is that clients demand a return on their investment, and are looking at various commercial avenues to realise this. “Therefore, we work with a range of clients, from individual property developers to large ‘portfolio’ investors, on areas including private residencies, commercial hotels and offices. We have also had great involvement in the short-term lettings market by creating bespoke interiors which produce a terrific yield for our clients.” G-Something’s latest project, a 10-bedroom boutique hotel in central London, was not without its fair share of pitfalls and challenges. However these were overcome to culminate in a fantastic end result of which the firm is very proud. Martyn tells us more: “Catering for the ‘short term’ lettings market, this hotel is situated in a very busy part of central London, which is a well-known tourist and business location. The immediate challenge was that we were working on a wonderful Georgian property, which had been badly neglected. Basically, the building was falling apart.” The property had to be stripped back to its bare bones, with G-Something replacing all five floors with new joists and flooring, and re-configuring the layout to accommodate 10 bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms. This also and a brand new plumbing G configuration needed installing, as well as a large capacity pump, to service all five floors of the building. Furthermore, a new 3-phase electricity supply had to be planned and co-ordinated with the local utility company, which required the road outside the property to be excavated. “In our experience, what we have found working on heritage buildings is that they are all extremely damp in the lower ground floor areas, and this was also an issue which had to be solved,” explains Martyn. “Another challenge was that, as the building is Georgian, and very narrow, we had to create the feeling of space within the property and make sure our configuration allowed the potential guests’ journey (carrying luggage etc) through the space was comfortable and not cramped. “As a result, the property looked amazing on completion, and resembled nothing of its previous image. We’re very proud that, although we re-structured the interior of the building, we managed to maintain the integrity of the Georgian exterior. The biggest plus for our client, was that we brought the project in on time and on budget, enabling the client to have time to market the hotel.” The future looks bright for G-Something and Martyn hints that something spectacular is in the pipeline which will all become clear “in the coming months!” For now, the firm’s future vision is to expand internationally and to continue to deliver its projects on time, on budget and with the consistently unique understanding of the clients’ needs that it has become renowned for.
