BUILD Home Builder Awards 2021 46 Feb21492 ased in the 798 Art District of Beijing, CU Office is integrated into three parts: CU Pool with a special focus on early research, prototype and product development; CU Space consisting of a gallery that focuses on the organisation of design exhibitions, forums, discussion meetings and publications; and CU Office which undertakes all types of building design, including architectural, urban and landscape, renovation, interior, and also specific types of product and exhibition design. After ten years of development, CU Office has completed a number of important research projects and developed product prototypes such as Beijing Urban Spatial Development Model - Jumping City. CU Office has also organised various exhibitions and seminars, such as the X-Field Beijing, Jumping City Exhibition and 798 Architectural Series Forum, involving more than 20 international architects and designers. CU Office has developed and completed multiple urban planning and architecture projects over the years, including the design in 2008 of more than 500 residential buildings, with the plan completed in 2009 for the reconstruction of Minle village in Sichuang province after the earthquake on 12th May 2008. In the same year, the company was entrusted to do the spatial plan and urban development plan for Shanghai An-ting International Automobile City which has also been adopted and implemented. In 2012, the construction of the private museum, Villa Jian located in Yantai city was completed and a 20-square kilometre town plan for Bestari Jaya of Malaysia was designed. More recently, CU Office’s projects have included the Beijing Cultural and Art Centre, the teaching and research building at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology University (BIFT), and the Puyang Big Data and Intelligence Ecological Park. CU Office has become the first private architectural design company to undertake international large-scale urban planning in mainland China. Chief architect and co-founder, Che Fei is a registered architect, having received architectural and design training from the Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing. B studied architecture in Germany at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and received his master’s degree of architecture at Dessau Architecture Institute (Hochschule Anhalt), and then his PhD from Bauhaus Weimar University. From there, he worked in the Christoph Kohl architectural design office in Berlin. Following the reconstruction of Minle village in Sichuang province in 2009, Che was nominated for the residential building prize in the China Architecture Media Awards. He has also been a member of the Urban Planning Expert Commission of China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and since 2007 and he has been teaching at the BIFT Design Academy in Beijing, leading a series of urban study workshops. As a theory writer, he published his first book in China in 2009, titled Concussion, and his writings have been published in various professional publications and journals. He is now viewed as one of the most innovative architects in China, with several notable civic, cultural, residential, and interior projects under his belt. Chief designer and co-founder, Zhang Xuefeng is a registered landscape architect. She received her bachelor of landscape architecture from South China University of Agriculture and her master’s degree of landscape architecture from Anhalt University, Germany. She worked in German landscape offices for years, participating in various projects, such as the Courtyard of National Museum China and Jincheng Children’s Park, as well as the conceptual planning of Donghu Lake Wuhan. Also, engineer, Peter Li has led CU Office’s input on a variety of exciting structures ranging from high-rise buildings, long-span structures, glass roofs and tension structures. As a structural engineer and project manager, he is involved with a broad range of building projects, from concept design to construction administration, having worked on many large prestigious buildings in the States and around the world.
