NSDB is passionate about sustainability and integrates green building practices into its innovative approach. Deirdre Hall began her career in high school as a draftsperson at Port Engineering in Newburyport where she worked her way up to designing subdivisions and private septic systems. Upon graduating high school, she attended MIT, majoring in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. Deirdre began working in the high-tech sector, specialising in electronics, mechanics, software, optics, and servocontrollers. After 17 years as an engineer, she left to establish a remodelling and furniture business, T&D Hall Associates, with her father. Eventually construction and commercial work became a large part of their offering, and Dee reimagined the business under the name North Shore DesignBuild, LLC. Over this period, NSDB cultivated a skilled network which Deirdre chooses from on a per project basis. NSDB specialises in a whole building approach that aims to find balanced solutions to conserve energy, foster sustainability, and create a comfortable, healthy environment. In addition to its environmental commitments, the company has adopted a client-centric philosophy, believing that everyone deserves a safe, high-quality home that is affordable in all markets. Most recently, NSDB created a schematic design for a new construction on a small lot. The potential buyer requested a four-bedroom, threebathroom house, luxury amenities, and a room for entertaining. The project's unique features are Aging In Place design, suitable for people of all ages, and Passive House, an energy efficient alternative to regular heating. NSDB also plans to utilise steel helical piles in place of a concrete foundation to lower the project’s carbon footprint. Over the past five years, Beverly’s design and build industry has experienced an extreme labour shortage. Prior to the pandemic, many small firms in the area began to share skilled labour and resources as the demand far outstripped the supply. Through these collaborations, NSDB has established strategic relationships with many renowned companies and expanded its talent pool. NSDB employs designers, engineers, contractors, technical professionals, and tradespeople for projects based on their specific skills, availability, and the type of project. NSDB is currently working on several projects, including two medium-sized renovations, and a challenging commercial fit-out venture in a net-zero municipality. The commercial fit-out is for a food production facility for a vegan meat substitute. The NSDB team is particularly excited about leveraging new mechanical technologies in this project. There is a high demand for NSDB’s services, and the company strives to foster more strategic industry connections to meet its community’s needs.
