Q1 2021

BUILD Q1 2021 10 Nov20705 t the core of Demirchelie there is a significant focus on projects that serve as a reflection of our time, current technology, and culture. Elaheh approaches each project in a speculative manner, with a process that promotes thinking, writing, and making while employing various digital technologies to advance the conceptual exploration of ideas. Like many of her peers, she has embraced a symbiosis with technology, utilising its benefits alongside more traditional efforts to deliver the best possible end product. The driving factor behind Demirchelie’s work is to highlight, examine and promote solutions to the world’s more pressing societal issues. She believes - wholeheartedly- that it’s an architect’s responsibility to contribute to these issues through innovative design. Within this ideology, the studio tackles significant global challenges such as the shortage of housing in urban areas, global waste production, and the severe increase of plastics in our oceans. The practice focuses on these broader issues through the lens of architecture, product design, and creative direction while collaborating with like-minded individuals and entities. Within this realm, the studio’s core research projects include multifamily and micro-housing in urban cities, AI in interior design, the future of retail, and fashion waste issues. These core research projects form new start-ups or contribute to existing start-ups and established companies by sharing information in an open platform to tackle larger global issues. In 2020, Demirchelie launched LEONOEL, a sustainable fashion brand in San Francisco, following a two-year research study on fashion waste issues. Equally, Elaheh is highly skilled at branding and market positioning companies and projects in the built environment. She has completed several award-winning architecture and creative projects through working with clients dedicated to the highest levels of craftsmanship and creativity. Here, she also makes efforts to collaborate with makers, artists, designers, and craftsmen to push the boundaries of design in each project she endeavours to undertake. However, with all of the above in mind, it would be remiss to gloss over the “living experience” of Elaheh’s work. Calm and serenity is in the essence of the spaces created, magnified by the rawness and purity of their material and design intent. All in all, the firm’s architecture projects are recognized for their Tackling Global Challenges Through Design More than anything, Elaheh Demirchelie, award-winning architect and founder of multidisciplinary design studio Demirchelie LLC, believes in the power of design in tackling global issues. Based in San Francisco, with a new office in Miami, the practice has built a reputation through its sustainable projects and a multidisciplinary approach, grounded in research and crafted with excellence in design. A clean aesthetic, where everything has a formal and a functional purpose, manipulated to establish a balanced anatomy of forms. In developing interior design projects, the entire process is shaped by merging Demirchelie’s expertise with the clients’ intuition to guide each project to a unique destination informed by the projects’ requirements. Small details are discussed early on to denounce a broader sensibility to the underlying character of each space. That underlying character is then mangled into elements from decor to furniture to hint at the bigger design expression bringing the entire project together in a cohesive tone. In 2018, Demirchelie designed a 160-unit affordable multifamily housing project in San Francisco, which contains micro studios and one-bedroom units to tackle the problem of housing in the city and served to open a new dialogue towards a more sustainable future. This future, in Demirchelie’s eyes, includes people of all echelons in society – not just those at the top of it. Ultimately, the firm has forged an impressive portfolio comprised entirely of memorable spaces that captivate the senses and cultivate social inclusion by merging powerful creative direction and branding strategies with an impeccable architecture and design approach. Elaheh Demirchelie received a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology. After directing several firms as Chief Creative Officer and Creative Director in the A&D industry, she started her own practice, Demirchelie, in San Francisco.
