It is how the award-winning projects, such as Freemark Abbey Winery, that make up the firm’s portfolio have come into being. The winery, for which SB Architects is the recipient of the BUILD Magazine: Best Winery Renovation (Napa Valley), is located in St Helena and dates back to as far as 1886. Today, the historic building has been restored and transformed, intertwining magnificent traditional elements with modern twists B Jul20544 to create a unique, welcoming space for guests to enjoy tours, wine tastings and fine dining experiences. Its exquisite quality and beautiful design are the winery’s defining features that make it unmistakably the work of SB Architects. The firm has acquired this reputation for excellence over six decades of innovation. Established in San Francisco by Donald Sandy in 1960, the firm began as a predominantly residential design firm, creating bespoke homes along the coast of California. Sandy was joined in 1968 by Partner Jim Babcock and the firm became Sandy & Babcock, growing its reputation across the state of California rapidly and broadening its design capabilities. It wasn’t until 2002 that the firm became SB Architects but by then, the architectural practice was an established player on the international stage, creating five-star hotels and prestigious mixed-use buildings all over the world and earning awards and accolades for its inimitable and daring works. 2020 was a landmark year for the firm as it celebrated its sixtieth year of innovation in architectural design. In the same year, Scott Lee, Bruce Wright and Mark Sopp, current Principals of the firm alongside Jorey Shoshanna Friedman and Pinar Harris, celebrated twenty years of leadership at SB Architects. To mark the year of celebration, SB Architects launched its brandnew website, marking a fantastic sixty years of progress and welcoming in the next era of innovation.
