BUILD Q1 2025 Best Commercial Construction Contractor 2024 – Utah Summit Building Construction is a full-service general contractor specialising in a comprehensive range of construction services to offer an integrated, seamless building experience. We find out more from CEO Ben Barlow as the firm is recognised in the Homebuilder Awards 2024. Based in Utah, Summit Building Construction (Summit) serves a diverse clientele including homeowners, developers, and business owners. The firm’s approach is tailored to meet the unique requirements of each project, whether it's a custom home, a commercial building, or a renovation project. With core values based on integrity, quality, client focus, innovation and teamwork, the firm aims to continuously improve its methods to enhance value for clients through a systematic and client-centric approach. “Our method is designed to ensure that you not only have a space you love but also a construction experience that was as stressfree as possible,” elaborates Chief Executive Officer, Ben Barlow. “Every step is taken with satisfaction in mind, from understanding your needs to handing over the keys.” With years of collective experience, the dedicated team has navigated through a wide array of projects, from residential homes to commercial builds. This experience translates into an intuitive understanding of the construction process, allowing Summit to anticipate and mitigate potential issues before they arise, and uphold the highest standards of safety, quality and ethics in every aspect of work that it undertakes. The home building sector in Utah is currently experiencing a dynamic period marked by both significant growth opportunities and notable challenges. Utah has witnessed a substantial influx of new residents, driven by its high quality of life, robust economy, and natural beauty. This population surge is due to people moving into the state for job opportunities, plus the increase in students has also fuelled demand for housing. There's a significant push towards urban infill and mixed-use developments to accommodate the growing population in a space-efficient manner. With environmental consciousness on the rise, there's a trend towards energy-efficient homes and sustainable building practices, which is shaping construction standards and consumer expectations. Finally, the tech boom is influencing home design with smart home technologies becoming standard features. Utah's real estate market is also influenced by housing trends, like the preference for larger homes due to remote work, and a focus on outdoor living spaces prompted by the pandemic. In summary, Utah's home building industry is robust, fuelled by demographic trends, economic development, and strategic infrastructure projects like the inland port. However, the challenge of water management looms large, pushing the industry towards more sustainable practices, which in turn presents both a challenge to adapt and an opportunity to lead in eco-friendly construction. In this highly competitive space, Summit distinguishes itself through a combination of experience, professionalism, client-centric service, and a unique operational model. “We pride ourselves on listening to clients,” Ben explains. “Our process begins with understanding your vision, your lifestyle, your budget, and every detail that matters. This isn't just about hearing; it's about comprehending and valuing your input. Each project is tailored to fit the needs of clients, ensuring that the end result isn't just a building, but a home that reflects their personality and requirements. We encourage client involvement at every stage, fostering a collaborative relationship that ensures the project aligns perfectly with expectations.” This customer-centric approach has stood the firm in good stead over the years and Ben recounts a project which Summit helped turnaround to ensure complete client satisfaction. A customer approached the firm to take over construction of their home from a previous company. They were frustrated and concerned with the previous contractor due to lack of communication and having no budgets in place. “Our team conducted a thorough site and project assessment - reviewing all existing plans,” Ben continues. “We identified inefficiencies, material waste, and quality issues that needed rectification and set up budgets for the customer.” From the outset, Summit established open communication with the homeowners, listening to their frustrations, aspirations, and ensuring their vision was at the forefront of its approach. Summit quickly mobilised its resources, including the in-house drafting team to revise plans to optimise for cost and time without compromising on design, and the experienced crews were deployed to resume construction. The project was completed six months post-takeover, significantly faster than the initial progress. “The homeowners were ecstatic,” enthuses Ben. “Not only was the project finished on time, but we also managed to incorporate several design upgrades they had previously given up on due to cost concerns. Despite the mid-project change, the quality of construction was significantly better and we managed to stay within the revised budget, even saving the clients’ money by addressing previous inefficiencies. The homeowners were not only satisfied but became advocates for our company, referring us to friends and family.” Recently, Summit was rewarded for its diligence in the Homebuilder Awards 2024 and bestowed with the prestigious accolade of Best Commercial Construction Contractor 2024 – Utah. Not only this, but Ben, who has sat on the local Home Builders Association for the last four years has been voted President for the forthcoming year. Now, with a full pipeline of projects for the year 2025 and 2026, Ben and the team are excited for the future and expect to see significant growth.
