BUILD Q3 2018
26 Build Q3 2018 rom her base in Buckinghamshire, Susanne offers expert services ranging from concept through to completion including all planning and building control applications requirements. To kick off the interview, we asked Susanne how she manages her team, and whether she has any key principles which she adheres to. “My practice consists of myself, supported by a team of draftspersons, vis- ualisers, quality surveyors, copy writers and accountants whom I call upon as needed on a project by project basis or dependent on workload. “In principle, I try to encourage my clients to reuse their existing structure as far as possible. Most houses can be reconfigured and/or extended to suit the modern family. I only recommend knocking down and rebuilding as a last resort.” When undertaking a new client, Susanne explains why communication is so important in her industry, and how being open and honest with clients has seen her achieve ultimate customer satisfaction on a variety of projects. “Communication is key. I keep an open line of communication with my clients throughout the entire project supported by face to face meetings held on a regular basis with sign off occurring at key stages.” Setting the company apart from its competitors is Susanne’s creativity and adaptability to gain an understanding of what the client wants. It is these aspects which separate the frim apart from its competitors. “Internally, I work with each client to explore all the opportunities a renovation can offer. Prior to submitting a project for planning, I create a 3D model and take the client on a virtual ‘walk-through’ of the design to ensure they understand the flow of internal spaces as well as connections to the external environment.” Having been selected as one of Build’s Ones to Watch for 2018 within the United Kingdom, Susanne explains what has been her most successful project to date, and what is the most important thing that she has learned whilst working in the industry. “My most successful project to date is most likely an internal reconfigura- tion and extension to a semi-detached family home. The client is adamant that the project changed the lives of every member of the family. She feels the family are more relaxed, communicative and generally happier because of the redesign of their home. Getting to know a client’s family dynamics and understanding how that is effected by their current home has proven invaluable to me when embarking on a new project.” Ultimately, Susanne believes that these lessons will help her move forwards, as she seeks to further establish the company as a leader within Professional and Thorough Throughout After nearly 20 years working in large commercial architectural practices, Susanne Hardvendel started Hardvendel Design, a small residentially focused design studio.
