BUILD Q3 2020 2 Welcome to the Q3 issue of BUILD Magazine. As always, we endeavour to be your source for all the latest news and features from across the global construction and property industries. This month we have refocused our efforts on the construction, architecture and property spheres. After all, we’re seeing a steady and slow return to (somewhat) normal operations around the world. Of course, any movement from a standing position seems lightning fast in comparison, though this quarter’s inclusions certainly seem to be moving to make up for lost ground. While architects seem to be rather independent in the way they work, it’s more correct to say that great architecture comes from seamless collaboration. Architecture’s leaders represent a true ‘meeting of minds’ – to use an oft-stated saying. Yet, enduring success often relies on a visionary figurehead to direct the team towards greatness, originality and innovation. It would be fair to say that Siavosh Adeli is one such visionary. We spoke to the renowned architect in this issue to find out more about his process and recent successes. Other than that, we hope you all stay safe and well. The team here at BUILD magazine sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this issue. We’ll see you in a couple of months. BUILD Q3 2020 News he reaffirmation of the scheme’s ending by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy means specifiers and developers will be hindered in their efforts to decarbonise. Specifically, those looking to install renewable heating systems on commercial buildings or small-to-medium-scale district heating projects will be without key financial support until the Green Heat Network Scheme (GHNS) comes into force in April 2022. With this in mind, Steve Richmond, Head of Marketing and Technical for REHAU Building Solutions, is calling for the Government to clarify how they intend to support non-domestic renewable heating schemes for the year before the GHNS takes effect. “The existing non-domestic RHI scheme is a vital motivator for small and medium-sized clients and developers looking to install renewable heating technology like heat pumps and district heating schemes,” says Steve. “The fact it is being wound up without an immediate replacement is therefore very concerning, but disruption could be potentially mitigated if the Government were to provide more details on what options are available pre-GHNS. “As members of the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) and the Heat Pump Federation (HPF), we are very aware of the potential adverse effect this upcoming disruption could have on the supply chain. For example, clients may be pressured into rushing prospective work to completion ahead of the March 2021 deadline, and projects using renewable heating technology after may become less financially viable.” As well as placing supply chain jobs potentially at risk, Steve believes the current lack of clarity around renewable heat installations is slowing adoption of low carbon solutions required for the UK to hit its decarbonisation targets. “As a country, we are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and though we’ve taken great strides in renewable electricity, renewable heating is lagging behind. “Steps are being taken to decarbonise the UK’s heating grid through measures, such as the Future Homes Standard, but more needs to be done before 2025. This is a critical time to Filling the Renewable Heat Policy Gap Following reconfirmation that the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme will expire after March 2021, REHAU is calling on the Government to take action to avoid a policy gap around the uptake of low carbon heating in building projects. T support developers, specifiers and installers using renewable heating technologies, but this current policy gap could undermine those efforts.” Though the UK is phasing out gas boilers in new residential developments from 2025 under the terms of the Future Homes Standard, prominent industry voices are encouraging the Government to go further. For example, the Confederation of British Industry has recently advocated for all gas boiler installations to be banned by 2025, and encouraged the use of technologies such as heat pumps and district heating instead. Steve concludes: “Decarbonisation is very much the watchword across industry at the moment, with companies looking to improve the sustainability of their operations as a priority. However, in order to make as much progress as possible, the Government needs to take further action and provide additional details to existing plans around renewable heat. “Steps such as reviewing subsidies which affect gas and electricity prices would likely encourage uptake of renewable technologies by increasing cost savings for end users. Additionally, providing additional consultations and information on the GHNS would help developers and specifiers make key project decisions ahead of April 2022. “We at REHAU are under no illusions that there is plenty to do to remain in accordance with the Government’s ambitious decarbonisation targets, but in order to achieve these goals, more support is needed.”

BUILD Q3 2020 6 Jan20160 nterior architecture projects can truly transform a space into anything that can be imagined. Creative individuals can take ideas and make them a beautiful reality with the help of specialist individuals and firms, but everything begins with an idea. This particular idea was first established in 1999 in Lausanne, Switzerland, as Adeli & de Rham, a joint venture between schoolmates and architectural geniuses, Siavosh Adeli and Joakim de Rham. Over the course of twenty one years, the firm has undergone many changes, both internally and externally, and has become the outstanding Swiss interior architecture firm known today as ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners. Despite the changes, the firm has remained squarely focused on its goal of providing clients with a creative approach to developing exclusive interior architecture projects. The firm was founded by Siavosh Adeli, a Swiss interior architect and the primary shareholder in ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners Ltd. However, Mr Adeli was not always so sure that he would be working in the world of architecture. In 1991, he found himself studying Visual Arts before deciding to change tack and adventure into the world of architecture, and more specifically, interior architecture. Five years later, Mr Adeli successfully obtained his diploma from the world-renowned and prestigious “Athenaeum” School of Architecture in Lausanne, a school famous in architecture circles for its origins under the famous Swiss architect, Alberto Sartoris. Following his successful graduation from the Athenaeum School of Architecture in 1996, Mr Adeli then went on to refine his skills working at two important architecture studios before deciding to branch out with Joakim de Rham, founding Adeli & de Rham. Together, Mr Adeli and Mr de Rham rapidly became a highly sought-after duo across Switzerland, and the wider world. Despite its youth, the firm was fortunate enough to work with many major companies, including British American Tobacco, Tag Heuer, and Mövenpick. The first four years of the business saw the two budding architects take on some challenging and stretching work, and interior architecture work itself began a highly effective part of the Outstanding Swiss Interior Architecture & Design Firm Understanding how each unique element and aspect of a space comes together to create something outstanding is a gift that few possess, and even fewer can master. Upon their return however, the two parted ways, with Mr de Rham choosing to move back to the United Arab Emirates and setting up the Swiss Bureau Interior Design office, whilst Mr Adeli remained in Switzerland. Now on his own, Adeli & de Rham instead became ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners Ltd, the outstanding company that we know today. Carefully choosing the wording of his company name, Mr Adeli made sure that “Partners” was a key part of it. Beyond the brilliance of its creativity and results-driven work, one of the company’s profound strengths was its sterling ability to source and partner with some of the most excellent and highly-specialised companies in the field of interior architecture and design. In the years since moving back to Switzerland and taking on sole ownership of ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners Ltd sixteen years ago, Mr Adeli has retained his gift for sourcing the best people in the business to partner with on his projects. Not only does partnering with the best companies in the business guarantee excellence in the finished space, but also in the finest details of the work away from the space, such as how they approach an expected budget or time constraints. 2008 saw Mr Adeli and the entire team at ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners Ltd begin work on a number of highly prestigious interior architecture and design projects. Offering and presenting himself as far more than just an interior architect or designer with the backing of a great firm, Mr Adeli instead cultivated a workplace culture that is more akin to an innovative laboratory, inventing stunning new rooms and breath-taking spaces. Whether it be the spectacularly modern, functional, and cutting-edge Emirates Room at the United Nations, or the striking new headquarters for the Fédération Equestre Internationale in Lausanne, created for HRH Princess Haya of Jordan. As well as the truly prestigious interior architecture and design projects that Mr Adeli and his firm has undertaken in the last sixteen years, there have also been a myriad of interior design turnkey projects that are more luxurious and commercial in nature. The Swiss Alps are famously home to alpine lodges, chalets, and villas that are of the highest luxury standard and feature some of the best interior design in the world. Working to standards set by VIP Swiss residents, Mr Adeli has created some of the best luxury lodges in the world, as well as nightclubs such as the D! Throughout its history, and during its present, ADELI Interior Architecture & Partners Ltd has offered a design approach that develops a visual identity which is adapted perfectly to the culture practices of its clients. Each piece of work is distinctly unique, yet familiar and perfect to the client. Armed with extensive knowledge and responsive, straightforward communication, this firm cares about ensuring safety in residential elevators to keep clients and their residents safe. Serving across the entirety of the state of South Carolina, Kendall Elevator has most recently been guided to success by the wisdom and leadership of Shannon and Steve Dempsey, drawing on decades of industry experience to bring new levels of excellence to the elevator industry. Quality elevator services cannot be overstated. When travelling in an elevator, people want to be assured of its safety, and that is exactly what Shannon and Steve has sought to offer between them, ushering in a new period of success for Kendall Elevator. These quality services can range from a free consultation, to scheduling services, to actually having a team from Kendall Elevator come and deliver an exceptional service. Shannon has earned himself more than twenty five years of industry experience from various sales, operations, and management positions at branch and regional levels across the United States. In his role as Vice-President at the firm, Shannon is responsible for providing service, repair, modernization, and installation sales, project management, orders, installation, and equipment specifications. On top of that, Shannon also offers operational and marketing support to customer companies to ensure total satisfaction, if it is required. Steve Dempsey, in his role as President of Kendall Elevator, brings more than four decades of experience in roles that vary across sales, operations, and management positions, at branch, district, and regional levels. Serving a similar role to that of Shannon, Steve ensures that everything is in order for service, repair, modernization, and installation sales, as well as support to customers who seek extra satisfaction. With a trusted professionals, an expert leadership team, more than half a century of experience, and smooth services, Kendall Elevator continues to stand out as an exceptional firm for elevator services. Elevated to New Heights of Success For some businesses, constantly going up and down would be a sign of trouble. Not so for the team at Kendall Elevator Co., whose every success hinges upon the products ability to go up and down on a regular basis. In 2019’s Real Estate & Property Awards in BUILD Magazine, the firm was awarded two titles; Best Elevator Service & Installation Company - South Carolina, and BUILD Award for Distinction in Elevator Modernisation 2019. Now, we examine the firm to what makes it such a worthy double-winner. F The firm’s three core services cover modernization, maintenance, and repair services. Firstly, modernizing an elevator can help to make sure it utilises the latest systems and products, meeting the highest and most rigorous of standards. Kendall Elevator perform equipment updates, each designed to make elevator service both safer and faster. Elevator modernization upgrades require a unique combination of techniques and knowledge, including engineering design experience, product and process knowledge, and field installation expertise. Kendall Elevator has these in abundance, having performed hundreds of elevator modernization updates and new installations. Maintenance is also key for elevators, preserving their safety for those using them on a daily basis. Certain parts in an elevator are designed for wear and tear through normal usage, and demand replacement on a regular basis. If they are not replaced, there is a very strong risk of failure and danger to those who would be using it. Having a service agreement in place with Kendall Elevator, equipment can be replaced regularly to ensure greater efficiency and a lower downtime. The firm’s representatives make periodic checks and recommendations to improve the reliability of all elevator equipment. However, should problems arise, then Kendall Elevator offers complete repair services for elevators, escalators, platform lifts, and stairlifts. Stocking all kinds of replacement parts that are both new and used, the firm can minimize downtime by teaming up with the area’s best and most reliable repair shops for high quality and rapid turnaround times. When travelling up or down an elevator, escalator, stairlift, or platform lift, being safe is crucial. Kendall Elevator deals in such crucial matters, but thanks to the efforts and experience of leaders such as Shannon and Steve Dempsey, there is complete comfort and assuredness for customers. Ensuring that every elevator in South Carolina is well looked after, Kendall Elevator is an outstanding example of how to run a business that deals well with the ups and downs of life. 11 Q3 2020 BUILD Feb20019 Remarkable Residential Architecture Architecture and design is an often overlooked art form by many. Where some people see buildings and houses, architecture firms and their teams see a myriad of shapes and movements, each part linking together seamlessly for a powerful or subtle effect. Residential architecture and design in particular, is a speciality of Ukrainian firm, KYB Architects. The firm was recognised in BUILD’s Design and Build Awards 2020, with the title of Specialists in Residential Design: “Private Houses” in Ukraine – 2020, so we took a closer look at its work to learn more about why. KYB Architects is a dynamic team of young, but experienced professionals that are wholly focused on designing and executing exceptional works of residential architecture. In a very short time, KYB Architects was able to establish itself as an architecture and design firm that creates an impeccably high standard and quality of product, erasing the verge of banal approaches that other competing firms have brought to the table before. Despite its youth, KYB Architects continues to grow and develop, setting new standards and benchmarks along the way for the entire field of architecture and design. One of the firm’s most recent works, which showcases both its ambition and its drive to succeed, is Dibrova Park, on the north side of Kyiv. Designed to be a green oasis in the north of the city, Dibrova Park is a residential complex that boasts an excellent architectural structure and a plethora of aspects that have all been implemented for the residents’ use. The site on which the residential complex will be located is bordered by the large Syretskiy arboretum, which is more than two centuries old. Dibrova Park is more of an open living space, with a green zone occupying just over three hectares in the centre of complex. The concept of the central courtyard green zone contains the idea of a large tree, and a divergent path which stretches into different directions and areas of the complex. Each path leads to areas such as sports playgrounds, recreational areas, promenades, and shopping facilities. As for the specifics of the green zone of Dibrova Park, KYB Architects have designed the complex to serve the people living there. With eight playgrounds equipped with modern equipment, two sports playing fields, amphitheatre alleys, 1200 meters of bike lanes, two shopping centres, and four parking lots, there is plenty to see and do for the residents of Dibrova Park. Additionally, the architecture of the complex as a whole resembles an open book, unfolded to each of its own areas so that windows from residential towers can maximize the views. Each part of the residential design has a different surface and architecture, which in turn shapes the image and emphasizes the uniqueness of the whole complex itself. These residential architecture ambitions and dreams that KYB Architects has helped to realise have come about because it, as a firm, is constantly striving to design special places that stimulate architectural change. Since its formation, KYB Architects has sought to always hear the customer before proposing solutions that meet their wishes. In meeting those wishes, the firm is not afraid to beyond the existing frameworks, and be super creative with its work. Constantly improving their skills, the designers and architects that work at KYB Architects work hard to project the future, and bring about lasting residential change that will still inspire people well into the years to come. Every single project that KYB Architects undertakes begins with the development of a concept. From there, that concept then forms the basis for the subsequent work of architects and designers. At every stage of the process, the principal goal remains the same – to create an architectural object and successfully implement it. Having a wonderful idea without efficient fulfilment and onsite supervision is meaningless and vain. That is why the formula of KYB Architects’ successful work is a creative component that is multiplied by professionalism. Customers whose ideas may at first seem challenging and impossible to realize can turn to KYB Architects, safe in the knowledge that the firm will always find a way to make that idea a reality in maximally efficient ways. As inspirational as they are exceptional, KYB Architects’ residential projects are to be admired for their architectural brilliance, and Dibrova Park is yet another success story for this Ukrainian firm. As it continues to push boundaries, realize projects, and create amazing spaces for all of its customers, KYB Architects can well and truly be considered specialists in residential design that inspires the people living there. Some of the firm’s specialties are working in the mediums of concrete, steel and glass to create stunning structures. Much of Bo’s inspiration as an architect is drawn from the traditional Danish architects, with many of the firm’s projects showcasing this fact. The renovation of Bella Vista is a perfect example of this, with much inspiration coming from Arne Jacobsen. With his background in Feng Shui, Bo also brings elements from Chinese and Buddhist backgrounds and combines them with Scandinavian minimalism. The results are always exciting to the eye and utterly unique. When it comes to putting together a project, the team always make the effort to take a holistic approach. This applies regardless of the nature and extent of the assignment. Throughout the process, the focus of Bo and his team is always on the provision of superb architecture that has the best possible impact on people. To this end, the team have been able to commit themselves to providing the best possible craftsmanship alongside innovative solutions. BUILD Q3 2020 16 Nov19542 here’s nothing ‘ordinary’ about C+ Studio’s work. Nothing expected or by the books. The firm has built a reputation on the back of a mission to always innovate, to move forward and shift long-established paradigms. This is evident in C+ Studio’s portfolio of work: with a plethora of projects in the residential, commercial, and hospitality sphere alongside renovation and interior design, it’s clear that the firm has enjoyed success through variety. Whilst variety certainly defines C+ Studio’s work, there’s no mistake that each separate project belongs to the firm’s greater approach. The team have developed a clean, modular style with notable touches of natural beauty – often with a distinct verdant peppering of vegetation incorporated into the design. Modernity is prevalent throughout, with sharp lines and perpendicular arrangements offering an almost industrial, yet undoubtedly functional, feel. When C+ Studio deviates from this aesthetic, it tends to go to the extreme – all sweeping curves and elegant archways, though the greenery remains. Here then lies the firm’s signature: combining the unmistakably man-made with the unmistakably organic. When curves and circles are used, it is to highlight the natural elements of the design, often incorporating vegetation as the centrepiece of the overall vision. Over the years, the studio has certainly grown bolder in its creative choices, highlighting a confidence that has only grown Thriving through Innovation and Creativity Specialising in architecture and interior design, C+ Studio Architects has swiftly distinguished itself through an ability to remain contemporary, and – perhaps more importantly – innovative. After all, it’s one thing to follow the crowd, another thing entirely to lead it. Here, we take a deep dive into the firm and its notable successes. T since its inception. The team have found themselves tackling larger projects, and more impressive displays of originality. Ultimately, there can be no doubt that C+ Studio has harnessed a style that seems to embody the epitome of contemporary architecture. The firm’s aesthetic is both clean and daring, playing with the traditional whilst being fundamentally functional at its core. This balance lends itself well when designing across the residential and commercial spheres, seamlessly incarnating the needs and wishes of all clients. Of particular note throughout all of this is the care and attention that C+ Studio’s expert and experienced team provides. Indeed, one of the core tenets that the firm was founded on was a dedication to client centricity. Whilst this is certainly not unusual for architecture firms, C+ Studio seeks – always – to go above and beyond the client’s expectations by working closely with them throughout the duration of the project. All in all, this summarises the studio’s ethos completely: they offer a commitment to creating extraordinary spaces that wholly suit the client’s requirements and needs. By working so closely, C+ Studio establish a crucial connection that surprisingly few firms realise is the key to enduring success in this incredibly competitive industry.
