BUILD Q4 issue
21 Q4 2018 Build ounded in Hong Kong in 1972, DLN has designed a number of the world’s tallest, largest and most complex buildings in each decade from the 1970s to the present. Today, the prac- tice continues to build on a tradition of creating value through design with a portfolio of innovative new projects in China, Southeast Asia and beyond. DLN was amongst the first non-domestic architects to work in Mainland China in the early 1980s. Since that time the international practice has expanded to include commissions throughout Southeast Asia in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and Indonesia and also in Central Asia, The Middle East, Europe and Africa. In China DLN is currently responsible for large projects under design or construction in more than thirty cities. With over 400 personnel, the practice handles the full spectrum of build- ing types ranging from mass housing to highly specialized institutional, hospitality and commercial projects. Assignments in hand include the de- sign of very large comprehensive urban developments coordinated with mass transit infrastructure, convention centres, hospitals, hotels, offices, shopping centres, sports complexes, apartments, and universities. DLN strives to deliver projects of the best quality for its clients. DLN does not adhere to any design aesthetic – the firm do not believe in a uniform DLN ‘look’. Each of their client’s designs reflect their tailored approach to their client’s brief and are sensitive to the communities in which the firm builds in. The philosophy of “Shaping Cities; Creating Values” represents DLN’s approach to any project is to exhaustively interrogate the potential of a new development to add value; value to client through higher revenue or lower cost, value to environment through energy-saving and remediation, value to the end-users and society as a whole through amenity and urban renewal. In addition to this, innovation is at the core of the DLN approach. Neither their clients nor the team at DLN would be satisfied with mere generic solutions. The firm’s goal is to make real value-added contributions as opposed to ‘gilding’ the product. DLN concurrently invests heavily in technology in order to advance its agenda for design that is informed by sustainable design principles. For example, the application of BIM and environmental and building physics analytical software have been adopted for a number of years by DLN to achieve even more-environmentally friendly designs that reduce project ecological footprints. DLN’s buildings demonstrate the uniqueness and characteristics of Hong Kong. And these buildings illustrate the diversity and unique talents of the firm’s architects. It takes a team of many great minds to deliver an end result that can be as classic and timeless as many of DLN’s portfolio of work.
