BUILD Q4 issue

26 Build Q4 2018 AR180152 here are few companies in the architectural sphere that have made more of an impact than ReardonSmith Architects. Lauded since inception for their elegant, functional, and in- novative designs, they remain – above all – the leaders of an industry held against the highest of standards. For over twenty-five years they have been the driving force behind some of the finest examples of global architectural design, creating timeless works of art that inspire and impress in equal measure. To start the interview, James gives a broad overview of ReardonSmith’s work and industry esteem, “We have an unrivalled track record providing full architectural consultancy services for the restoration and rebuilding of luxury hotels in London, an enviable reputation for the design of new destinations in Europe and the widest experience of hotel architecture across the entire spectrum of new-build and existing estates. The com- pany’s achievement stems from a profound understanding of hotels as an asset, an operation and as a guest experience. James continues, “The practice has specialised exclusively in the design of hotels and resorts for over 25 years, and today has a portfolio of work that encompasses iconic hotels, visionary schemes, glamorous destina- tions and many of the preferred business and leisure hotels around the world. Projects are located across Western, Central and Eastern Europe, North and Southern Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean.” The discussion soon turns to how ReardonSmith differentiate themselves from pretenders, imitators and competition in the sector. Ultimately, James believes that it is their passion that acts, fundamentally, to distin- guish the firm. “Everyone at ReardonSmith is passionate about hotels. Our team enjoys the entire process, from first meeting with a new client to building a clear and personal understanding of their aspirations. This invariably calls for increased time an effort to get to the end line. We always complete what we have started and take great pride in seeing our clients happy with the final product.” This approach, partnered with a dedication to client collaboration, help frame ReardonSmith’s approach to new projects: “The key to every pro- jects success is team wide collaboration. Hotel design briefs are getting increasingly detailed and complex, the lead architect/designer must strive to foresee, de-risk and resolve challenges before they become The Global Experts in Luxury Architectural Design ReardonSmith Architects Ltd is an award-winning global leader in hotel and resort design. In July, they were named among the winners of BUILD’s 2018 Architecture Awards with the title of ‘Best Global Hotel & Design Firm” in the United Kingdom. On the back of this well-deserved achievement, we spoke with James Twomey, Director of ReardonSmith, to find out how they have forged their global reputation in this notoriously competitive arena. T disruptive to the creative processes. Establishing a fully considered brief is essential. Then good design will take care of the rest.” Regarding current projects, James could reveal little but intriguing hints, “in general terms, we are currently working on a broad range of project descriptions and scales. These include but are not limited to, a multi- million pound new build development which forms a significant part of the urban regeneration development on the Thames, a luxury bespoke hotel on one the London Grand Estates and the conversion of a former embassy into what will be a grand and world leading urban hotel.” “Our mission is to solidify our reputation as providers of a dedi- cated professional and innovative service. Increasing a broader portfolio of project work will enable us to achieve this.” Working in Greater London offers a celebration of choice for Reardon- Smith, gifting them options to work in a variety of styles and to a myriad of sensibilities. James speaks for a moment on the opportunities that London brings as a centre of operation: “Greater London is currently and will always be a buoyant market for development. The growing urban sprawl is evident as well as the constantly changing City skyline. The more recent geopolitical developments and broader international market forces present heavy influences on the rules and costs of commerce in this great city. Competition in the land acquisition sector is fierce, progress is still evident but the pace of decision making, and committal is much slower. Hopefully things will settle after March 2019.” Finally, coming to the end of the interview, James highlights recent developments in the industry as a whole, and how studios will have to adapt accordingly, “The professional service requirements of architectur- al practices are invariably being tailor made to suit the client’s require- ments on a project specific basis. The profession will have to adjust to these changes and adapt our working methods to suit. A full architectural service requirement is becoming less common in our experience.” Contact: James Twomey Company: ReardonSmith Architects Ltd Address: 10-13 The Leathermarket, Weston Street, London, SE1 3ER, UK Telephone: 020 7378 6006 Web Address: www.reardonsmith.com
