25 Q4 2019 BUILD Aug19056 aving worked for more than eighteen years in ar- chitecture and construction, Guillermo is a contem- porary architect who yearns for knowledge around all aspects of his profession. After graduating, he dedicated the first ten years of his career to construction in order to better understand all the stages from earthworks, to foundations, right through to the finishing touches and fine details. Eventually, he founded his own architecture firm and has incorporated all his knowledge into creating beautifully designed spaces. As recently as 2018, Guillermo’s architecture firm began work on a residential pavilion extension in Nuevo Leon, near Monter- rey. Arising from a need to have an independent area that could foster recreation and host social gatherings, the pavilion itself is split-level, erected half a level below the property’s general ac- cess. This avoids competing with or overshadowing the existing construction, whilst still managing to achieve a new sense of co-existence and mutual acknowledgement across the property. With a construction space of just over 191 meters squared, the pavilion is in a strategic area adjacent to the house. With the client requesting minimal invasion into the existing green spaces, Guillermo decided it would be best to create the space over a current basketball court which was adjacent to the house with easy access to the street. Nature plays a very important role in the pavilion’s design, since from the beginning the client expressed a desire to protect and preserve an oak tree located right in the center of the selected area. The oak tree is framed in the design, with a courtyard gar- den and stepped jardinière. A contemplative garden covers the rooftop of the pavilion, serving as an extension of the existing garden and acting as a natural border that frames the impres- sive Sierra Madre mountain. The pavilion itself houses a bar, dining room, TV room and billiard room, complete with an open terrace that has a grill and amphitheater.
