15 Canada’s North Rock Group is a fullservice Canadian general contractor owned by brothers Tony and George DiPede and their brother-in-law Armando Cappuccitti. This family has a long-standing history within the local infrastructure contracting scene, with Carlo, Tony and George’s father, being an infrastructure contractor for more than three decades before passing away in 2000. With Carlo proudly looking down on them every day, this family unit and their team complete an array of reconstruction and new subdivision projects throughout the Southern Ontario region. From Huntsville to Toronto, North Rock Group been expertly servicing the people of Southern Ontario since 1992. Having grown out of the DiPede Group, which itself was one of the region’s most trusted names in watermains and road building, this firm immediately recognised that it had big shoes to fill. It is for this reason that, since day one, North Rock Group has combined the traditional elements of hard work and trust that made its predecessor so successful with cutting-edge technology and pioneering construction techniques. Transcending the normal boundaries associated with infrastructure contracting with ease, North Rock Group has spent the last three decades offering clients across this region a range of services, with these spanning everything from the municipal servicing of land development projects to wastewater management, underwater marine works, and everything in between. The firm is constantly honing its craft and is always on the lookout for innovative new ways to improve on its existing methods and processes. “North Rock Group provides turnkey buildings for commercial and industrial needs, and one area of specialisation that has emerged is the construction of water and sewage pumping stations. These stations have consisted of fully automated above ground buildings as well as underground reservoirs and storage facilities.” When it comes to infrastructure specifically, North Rock Group’s adept status sees it able to work with any pipe in any conditions. Be it small or large diameters of all major piping materials (concrete, PVC, steel), this team work valiantly across all soil and ground conditions, from silty sand through to granite bedrock, in almost any location, be it a road with heavy traffic or a quiet residential street. Determined to provide quality infrastructure so that local communities may thrive, North Rock Group is immensely proud to be today’s contractor for tomorrow’s world. This is a company that prides itself on the strength of its team, something that starts with its management and the more than six-decades of diverse industry experience that they possesses between them. On the back of this veteran guidance, all of the individuals comprising this 40-strong team are empowered to complete projects in a safe and timely manner. As for the specifics of these projects, North Rock Group’s close ties with such local communities as the City of Toronto and the Region of York see it provide a range of civil infrastructure services, ranging from water services and roads to residential and business buildings. The company works with both public and private clientele to achieve its aims of a brighter future, and its successful track record and past portfolio of projects stand as testaments to its ability to consistently deliver first-rate developments. One recent project that Tony tells us he and the team are particularly proud of was carried out with Graywood Group and SCS Consultants in Toronto. Required to move a storm sewer from the 1800s that connected to a watercourse on one side and an existing storm pipe on the other, issues faced across this project included lessthan-ideal ground conditions, the rerouting of the watercourse whilst also building a manhole, as well as the close proximity to buildings and having to work with external groups to demolish the existing building. This last point is particularly important, as affiliations with other contractors such as NuRoad Construction form the basis of North Rock Group’s lasting success, as its comprehensive network eliminates the need for a client to have to deal with multiple contractors. As one can imagine, the benefits of this are endless, as not only is the process streamlined, but the quality of the work is uniform. For example, in reconstruction projects filled with unknowns, this emphasis on collaboration sees problems quickly and effectively resolved. Such excellence is also embodied in Tony and George themselves, both of whom play big roles in the wider industry through their work on a number of committees and boards, including the likes of the Ontario Sewer & Watermain Construction Association (OSWCA), Ontario One Call, and the Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Contractors Association (GTSWCA). The input these brothers have in the wider decision-making processes of this sphere represents the industry-leading knowledge that expertly guides their firm. Whenever they are contracted for a new project, the first step taken by this team is to see if it can be completed with just their own workforce, or if they will need to use specialised subcontractors (usually for tunnelling). Then begins the process of working out a schedule to see that timelines, ground conditions, and traffic implementations all align, with all of these elements being key to guaranteeing the safe execution of a project. Working safely and efficiently is what North Rock Group has built its best-in-class reputation upon, and even though reconstruction work is awarded by open tender (bidding), those clients who are lucky enough to end up with this firm as their contractor will quickly come to realise that this family business is different. Its owners regularly make their presence felt and they are always close by should any issues arise throughout the project. This personal touch goes a long way, particularly when it comes to dealing with local residents. As it looks ahead to the future, North Rock Group is reflecting on its performance in 2024, which, whilst still exemplary, was hindered by varying work levels as a result of a number of factors, many of which are out of the hands of this dedicated team. Moving into the final weeks of this year and beyond into 2025, Tony feels very fortunate that the firm has already been able to secure enough work, and he is excited about the prospect of continuing to pioneer in new environments across Southern Ontario and, perhaps, beyond. Named as the Best Infrastructure Construction Company 2024 - Southern Ontario, we have recognised North Rock Group for being much more than just an ordinary infrastructure contractor. With more than 30 years of experience already under its belt, we are confident that the future will be just as bright as the past for this standout contracting business in the heart of Canada’s southernmost province.
