Real Estate & Property Awards 2022 BUILD 13 Sep22343 Most Outstanding Small PBSA Operator - North of England Nurtur Student Living (NSL) is a bespoke management company raising the bar in student management across the UK. It is providing residents with a new level of living that has been designed from the ground up to focus on wellbeing. This is more than student living; it’s a regular friendly face to chat to, it’s a home away from home, and it’s ideal for every type of student to belong to, learn, and thrive within. urtur Student Living is an experienced student industry specialist focused on providing the highest level of attention, customer service, and support for students, their families, and investors. It’s student services and management reimagined, to nurture students into the next generation of young professionals. After opening its flagship property in Sheffield in the midst of the pandemic, NSL took over management of an existing property in Preston that had previously received negative online feedback from its residents. After spending over £60,000 on renovating social spaces, NSL has managed to get Canterbury Hall to number two on Student Crowd listings – an online league table that only verified student accounts can contribute to. Furthermore, the rebooking rate saw over a third of existing students satisfied enough to rebook with NSL and live in the building for a second consecutive year. Indeed, the priority for NSL is student health and wellbeing, from the way its buildings are designed with private studios alongside ample social spaces to combat loneliness, to the focus and budget given to a busy events calendar that aims to stimulate students, develop skills, and help to build friendships. Students enjoy visits from therapy dogs, baking challenges, smoothie bikes (to encourage students to cycle for a free smoothie), as well as a free nutritional breakfast every Friday morning. With Nurtur House having opened during the pandemic, it meant NSL had to navigate many issues beyond its control, thus its team worked harder to prioritise student wellbeing using effective communication to alleviate any further stress they were going through. N Students who were unable to arrive in September 2020 due to COVID-19 were offered free cancellations and/ or tenancy delays. This meant that any student who could not commence their tenancy due to COVID-19 were released from their contract or offered a delay to their arrival date without financial penalty. This resulted in a total of 2,245 weeks offered in delayed contracts, with a direct cost to the company of £379,750 in rent loss during its first week in operation. To protect the safety of residents, anti-bacterial paint was applied to the walls throughout Nurtur House, offering a twoyear protection against bacteria growth. Communal seating was treated with Biomaster antimicrobial technology, offering protection against odour and illness-causing bacteria. A sterilestudio-cleaning service was offered to students, providing peace of mind for those who needed it, as well as anti-bacterial hand gel stations and PPE equipment available throughout the building. Students who alerted staff to suffering with COVID symptoms were also offered a test free of charge, before lateral flow testing was made freely available by the government. Ultimately, NSL sees a high level of customer satisfaction from the students living in its accommodation, which has been voiced to it via various platforms, including Google and Student Crowd. This includes a significant improvement from students who lived in its Preston site before NSL began managing it. Now, NSL’s aim is to have five properties under management by 2025!
