2018 Recycling & Waste Management Awards Build 13 Working to ignite individuals, state and local government, community, and corporate responsibility through strategic initiatives and volunteer action, KCB is committed to preserving and protecting California’s beautiful resources for generations to come. Alongside this critical work, KCB additionally functions as an umbrella organization that initiates and networks local affiliates in communities across California. The organisation utilises a range of initiatives to support local people and companies, including America Recycles Day on November 15th, on which KCB runs the K-12 Challenge, which aimed at promoting and increasing recycling in all California K-12 schools. The Challenge asks students, teachers, and school staff to recycle the most material during a one-month period and report their totals, verified by receipts from their recycling hauler. All public, private, and charter schools in the state are eligible to compete for cash prizes totally more than $38,000 by registering at Greencaschools.org and easily entering data into the simple online system. Since 2015, when the K-12 Recycling Challenge started, the total weight of material diverted from landfills has increased from 424,555 pounds in 2015 to 1,276,961 in 2018. The only school program in the state promoting California’s goal of reaching a diversion rate of 75% from our landfills by 2020, the K-12 Recycling Challenge has been recognized by State Legislators and State Recycling Organizations as Program of the Year. This year the K-12 Recycling Challenge is endorsed by CalRecycle, the California Refuse Recycling Council, the California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA), and Keep America Beautiful. It is supported by corporate donations from a wide variety of industries, including the American Chemistry Council, American Beverage Association, the Carton Council, Dart, Metropolitan Recycling, LLC., Pepsi, Rubios Coastal Grill, and Paperseed Foundation. Looking ahead, KCB will continue to use challenges such as this to raise awareness on the benefits of recycling and reduce the region’s environmental footprint.
