2019 Sustainable Building Awards

BUILD 2019 Sustainable Building Awards 10 May19297 ombining traditional quality craftsmanship with new technologies, Evan James Design works to endorse customer individuality, product longevity and durability within the commercial and residential sectors. Recently, Evan James Design were commissioned to create the feature wall surface to the private courtyard garden at Randolph House, Berkhamsted. The client, Dee Dashwood, had the creative vision for Evan James Design’s signature interior surfaces to be fully imagined within the small exterior courtyard space. This resulted in two months of testing and modification on Evan James Design’s part to modify and recalculate the structure and finishing of the Applicate surface for exterior fabrication. Evan James Design: Best Sustainable Surface Design Company - Wales From its base in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, Evan James Design provide inventive sustainable surface solutions to a wide variety of clients. As part of our showcase of some of this year’s deserving Sustainable Building Awards winners we profile the firm and share an insight into the projects that have driven it to the success it enjoys today. C The design brief was to create a ‘zen’ exterior setting for not only private contemplative use, but also the many social events held across the year. The courtyard measures approximately 8m, therefore it was essential to create a far larger sense of space than was actually on offer, bridging the surrounding interior aesthetics of the kitchen and living room to the outside space. The wall covering extended the visual plane by drawing the eye’s attention upwards, alongside deepening the perspective of the space through the graduated grey colour wash applied to the individual modules and backboard. The inherent acoustic properties of the surface covering disperse and absorb noise levels achieved during social gatherings, and again aiding in the perception of a larger space than what is physically present. From the design stage to manufacturing it took 12 months. Then, from manufacturing to completed installation took eight weeks, and the team at Evan James Design are incredibly proud of the solution they created for their client, which showcases their ingenuity and innovation. Moving forward, Evan James Design will continue to undertake exciting new projects such as this to ensure its continued success. Among these new projects is a recycling effort to use waste pieces from previous projects in a new product line, which is due to be launched in early 2020. This exciting project and more will help the firm to reduce its carbon footprint and act as a thought-leader for the sustainable construction industry.
