BUILD Sustainable Building Awards 2022 4 ith his grandfather having owned a construction company, Barry O’Connor pretty much grew up on building sites, learning the ins and outs of construction, from project management to building to carpentry, and more. He went on to work for construction companies, gaining vast experience in site and project management. In the four years since Trusko’s establishment, Barry, Graham and the team have proven their next-level skillset, experience, and ability to deliver bespoke solutions for clients. They work with countless prestigious brands and demanding individuals who expect no less than an outstanding outcome for their construction project. Thus, each and every element of a project is scrutinised to ensure only the very best quality of work. These high standards are relayed to the company’s subcontractors and suppliers through high quality control procedures and best construction practices. The aim is to not only to deliver extraordinary results, but also to push the boundaries on current construction methods and processes to ultimately deliver a much more sustainable project lifecycle. The company takes the environment and the ways in which construction can impact it negatively very seriously. Barry tells us, “Construction is one of the biggest sectors impacting sustainability, receiving more pressure from the government and industry to adapt their operations as a response. Trusko is at the forefront of sustainability, and we actively challenge and drive our consultant teams to adopt this mindset as well.” The construction industry has changed in response to the mounting pressure from the government to act in favour of the environment. For instance, modern methods of construction (MMC) are increasing in popularity across the industry. Trusko has taken this methodology and implemented it within its current projects by utilising local workforces, bulk buying materials and mass deliveries, and managing onsite with storage facilities. It also implements a “reuse, retain, and repair” system internally to ensure its workforce retain and reuse materials or build over instead of demolishing. Furthermore, Trusko’s current Exeter project is a pilot of modular construction which will be rolled out in conjunction with the government to later form modular villages with a low carbon footprint. These will be made up of 45 new-build houses, designed to blend in with the character and nature of the existing historic villages, whilst being optimised for biodiversity. The vision for the project is to focus on beauty, nature, greenery, and safety, with all of the new houses benefiting from a pleasant cycle route, village green, orchard, wildflowers, permeable parking, and warm streetlights. Another notable project which has been completed by Trusko is its three-storey extension on top of existing flats in Harrow, Greater London. Several new flats were created using a steel structure and light steel walling system. A new lift was also installed, along with internal access amended and the entire cladding system being replaced to conform with EWS1. The location of the project did present a series of challenges, including transport and delivery of steel within the confined spaces of London, as well as suitable welfare for the workforce. The building remained occupied by residents whilst works were taking place which meant disruption needed to be kept to a minimum. If this wasn’t enough, Barry jokingly tells us, “We decided that project wasn’t challenging enough for us. We finished the project in Harrow and then delved straight into another distressed project with the same developer, a commercial to residential refurbishment comprising of 47 flats in StainesUpon-Thames”. The Trusko team will give this building a new lease for life, extending the building with a further two storeys and adding nine additional apartments with stunning views of the beautiful River Thames and surrounding area. Each apartment will be contemporarily and individually designed and styled with young professionals in mind to create new opportunities for firsttime buyers. Once again, logistics is a challenge, along with residents occupying the building and pedestrians everywhere. Overall, every Trusko project is interpreted from multiple areas and perspectives. Prior to taking on a project, the team considers if the end product and client would be suitable for the company and the way in which it manages and works. The W Best Bespoke Construction Management Company 2022 - UK Barry O’Connor relocated to Britain, from South Africa, in 2004 with a compounded background in construction. In 2018, he founded Trusko, a specialist construction company delivering bespoke services within principal contracting, with the help of an extensive and reliable supply chain. In light of the firm’s success within the Sustainable Building Awards 2022, we got in touch with CEO, Barry, and COO, Graham Cunningham, to learn more about what their team can do for clients. Nov22136

5 Sustainable Building Awards 2022 BUILD company will then consider if the project will be contributing to the local economy and environment, and if the completed product would fit in with its outstanding reputation. Trusko’s core ethos is that communication is key, which is why it manages its clients’ expectations from day one. Each client is kept up-to-date on every detail of their project throughout the construction process; the company does not set up its clients to fail, so much so that it delivers quality even at its own cost. Trusko’s quality management and control is compliant with internationally recognised standards, including ISO 9001:2015, so each item of work is scrutinised throughout the process to ensure only the best quality of work is seen on its contracts and final products. Graham Cunningham says, “We question everything. We are really, in every sense of the word, out-of-the-box thinkers and I think that’s one of the things that helps us to achieve what we do in the way we do; there is no ‘can’t be done’ or ‘no’ in our vocabulary. It’s just ‘what do we need to do?’ We will find the answer and I think that is possibly why we’ve managed to grow to where we are in such a short amount of time.” Agreeing, Barry adds, “We just don’t give up. We keep pushing boundaries, we keep finding solutions. We keep driving and we remain positive. Some days, I think other companies would just walk away. However, our focus always remains on product quality and client satisfaction. The team’s motivation and enthusiasm for their work contribute significantly to the success of Trusko. They enjoy what they do, they like to collaborate, and they enjoy being challenged. This healthy working atmosphere is to do with Barry and Graham’s dedication to looking after their people: ensuring they are trained and safe in the workplace, that they have the tools to get the job done to a high standard, that they have healthy work-life balances, and knowing each and every member of staff on a personal level. Graham shares, “Should you decide to leave Trusko, you leave better than when you started and that might be in terms of a technical knowledge and maybe in terms of project management knowledge. It may be in terms of just general time management. That is my hope for everybody that comes to the company. We expect a lot of ourselves, we expect a lot of everybody who works for us.” He continues, “I pride myself when I walk onsite. I know everybody’s name. That personal touch, it motivates people and I think that is really important in the construction culture. Building those relationships and understanding that we are

BUILD Sustainable Building Awards 2022 6 essentially looking after our workforce as well as our clients, that’s where we really make a difference.” The safety and well-being of Trusko’s workforce is of the utmost importance. Their management teams are dedicated to ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, best practice, and company procedure, and supporting teams by monitoring and auditing all working environments. Site inductions and training are implemented, too, in order to minimise risk on all projects. To reflect its complete dedication to quality management, health and safety, and the environment, Trusko goes one step further to obtain the most coveted accreditations in the construction industry. Not only are its systems and process all the more robust and efficient because of this, but it equally gives clients peace of mind when it comes to the team’s knowledge and ability to create exceptional outcomes. Ultimately, Trusko has defied the odds, thriving within the construction industry despite how turbulent it has been in the last four years. The company has coped with Brexit and the pandemic, in addition to the Suez Canal obstruction, unprecedented inflation, and brewing recession. Barry comments, “We would like to congratulate every other construction company still trading and wish them the best of luck for the future.” Barry says, “At Trusko, we believe there is nothing more satisfactory than building a home where our client will live forever, and we push boundaries with cost savings and quality to ensure our clients’ homes will stand the test of time.” Company: Trusko Limited Contact: Barry O’Connor, CEO / Graham Cunningham, COO Email: [email protected] Website: www.trusko.co.uk

BUILD Sustainable Building Awards 2022 8 Nov22018 eilume’s primary products–thermoformed ceiling panels–are a more sustainable and more decorative alternative to the near-ubiquitous mineral fiber acoustic panels found in most suspended grid ceilings. Ceilume panels are easily recyclable, and are made with recycled materials, including 98% and 100% recycled versions. They are more durable and cleanable than conventional mineral fiber panels, so they do not need the frequent replacement required of mineral fiber, reducing energy consumption for raw materials extraction, manufacturing and transportation. Transluminous® Ceilume panels, made from light-transmitting material, are used to create luminous ceilings which, combined with LED light sources, can reduce energy consumption on an ongoing basis. Compared to the mineral fiber ceilings they replace, Ceilume panels consume 80% less raw material by weight during manufacturing. They are just 0.013” or 0.030” thick and nest closely, requiring roughly one quarter the cargo space of mineral fiber, lowering transportation impacts. Thermoformed panels have a longer life cycle than mineral fiber panels. Mineral fiber absorbs moisture readily, even from high atmospheric humidity, causing unsightly stains and promoting the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria that make the panels unhygienic, requiring replacement. Moisture can also cause sagging. Mineral fiber panels are vulnerable to edge and corner breakage during normal handling, which can release silica and other fibers into a room, impacting indoor air quality. Stains and visible damage often cause premature ceiling replacement, multiplying life cycle impacts. Thermoformed panels, by contrast, are impervious to moisture, and comply with FEMA Category 4 materials for flood-damage resistance. They are washable, highly stain-resistant, and do not promote mold growth. They have been proven more durable than mineral fiber in third-party testing according to ASTM D1308 – Strength Properties of Prefabricated Architectural Acoustical Tile or Lay-in Ceiling Panels, which evaluates hardness, friability, sag, and transverse strength. Thermoformed panels will predictably need replacement less frequently, reducing energy consumption associated with extraction, manufacture, and transportation. Ceilume has closed the loop on recycling. The company has recycled post-industrial vinyl scrap for decades, and offers many patterns in 98% and 100% recycled content versions. Ceilume now has a take-back program for post-consumer panels and tiles, and recycles over 100 tons of vinyl per year, reducing consumption of virgin vinyl and saving energy. Ceilume’s Transluminous panels, available in three diffusions (clear, frosted, and translucent) can contribute to reduction in daily energy consumption through use as luminous ceilings illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting sources. Luminous ceilings date back decades, and many older installations have yellowed acrylic lenses that reduce illumination levels. Upgrading these ceilings from fluorescent tubes to LEDs and replacing darkened lenses with new Ceilume panels can lower energy consumption and improve illumination simultaneously. A luminous ceiling could potentially save energy compared to below-ceiling lighting fixtures. Heat generated by above-ceiling LED sources is isolated from the air-conditioned space below the ceiling, which can reduce the burden on air conditioning systems and lower energy usage. Ceilume products are Greenguard Gold certified, and have a health product declaration, using vinyl produced with clean techniques to make it free of heavy metals and significantly reduce chemicals of concern. They can contribute to numerous credits under the USGBC’s LEED program. Ceilume panels are made in 40 patterns both traditional and contemporary to complement virtually any architectural style. They are available in 13 colors and finishes including opaque solids, metallics, faux-wood grain, and Transluminous options. 9 Sustainable Building Awards 2022 BUILD Nov22245 Most Ethical Creative Building Company - South East England When looking to take on exciting new projects, it pays to have a team by your side who are as committed to your vision as you are. The team behind Creative Project Services Ltd have a long track record of success, taking projects from feasibility studies through to final sign off. Having achieved success in the Sustainable Building Awards 2022, we caught up with Elliot Wakeford to find out more the secrets of the team’s success. reative offers a design and build company with an inimitable set up. At the heart of the firm is a commitment to providing a culturally different approach to the construction industry, one which delivers incredible results every time. Having undertaken projects of all sizes, providing support at every and any level, the Creative team have garnered a reputation to be proud of. When we caught up with Elliot, we were keen to know what precisely sets Creative apart from the competition. “Whether it is an internal reconfiguration, extension or a new home, there are a lot of things to be taken into account when you are thinking about extending or remodelling your home,” Elliot tells us. “Most companies do this one item at a time which, whilst seeming logical can actually have a negative effect on the overall project. We take everything into account from day one, planning the space and layouts at the same time as working out furniture and fittings.” This holistic approach has allowed the team to achieve stunning results in even the most challenging of situations. A recent project the team undertook was started in December 2019, in wet and windy weather. The property was for a young couple with two young girls, who were living nearby as the project went forward. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Elliot picks up the story. “The steels, external construction and dividing of the new space had all been carried out,” he tells us. “This left plaster boarding, plastering and all finishes internally C and externally to be finished.” At great cost to the business, the team found the materials which were, at the time, in massive demand and short supply. “We pride ourselves on being a service-based company that build and nurture our client relationships,” Elliot says, “so striving to get our clients and their young family back in their home was a priority for the whole team.” Despite the challenges of an international pandemic, Elliot and the team saw the project completed a mere three weeks late, the first time the team had ever missed a deadline. Such commitment is a credit to their hard work. For the team, it was a major achievement, one against impossible odds. For the client, it was the opportunity to return to the family home, now fully complete and equipped for them to live in, during a period of immense strain. The detail and level of communication was crucial to the success of the project, and the team work on plenty of design and architectural projects with their clients. That said, when it comes to live builds, Creative focuses on a handful at a time. “This is an intentional business decision to limit the amount of builds we undertake over the course of the year,” Elliot explains, “to carry out the chosen projects to an exceptional level.” When we talk about a successful business model, surely this is the one to look at. The team have been able to work on amazing projects with a host of exciting clients. We asked Elliot to detail the team’s plans for the future “The future plans for the company are to design and develop our own housing development sites,” he says, “and we are working away in the background to make this a reality. We want to work with people and investors with the same passion and ethos as ourselves, if you think this could be you, please feel free to reach out, we would be pleased to talk to you.” We cannot recommend this team more highly. Their renown throughout the industry speaks for itself. Company: Creative Project Services Ltd Name: Elliot Wakeford Email: [email protected] Web Address: www.creativeprojectservices.com

BUILD Sustainable Building Awards 2022 10 (which includes heating and ventilation) accounts for between 30% to 60% of the total energy consumed. Thus, we have a significant role to play in reducing energy and water usage, and as a welcome by-product, a reduction in the consequential energy and water costs.” The team have therefore worked tirelessly to ensure that their solutions both use as little water as possible as well as being energyefficient. “We get the fundamentals right,” Nigel says, “never taking short cuts especially in the developmental stage of a project. No shorthand, always clearly showing how calculations were done and how and why decisions were made.” It’s this attitude, one of innovation tempered by long experience that has made the team at VMG Consultants such a success story to be celebrated. Looking ahead, Nigel sees the future as one where VMG Consultants will play a crucial role in improving the state of Southern Africa’s fortunes. “Southern Africa has a vast amount of old, dilapidated and obsolete mechanical equipment dating back decades,” he says. “We hope to be a major force in bring these plants up to date, saving our clients significant costs of their replacement, by harnessing the technological advancements of the twenty-first century.” This bold new thinking is the secret that has driven the accomplishments of VMG Consultants. We can’t wait to see what he and his amazing team do next! Company: VMG Consultants cc Name: Nigel Pengelly (owner and Senior Engineer) Paul Stobbs (Group Manager) Email: [email protected] / pauls@vmgconsultants. co.za / [email protected] Web Address: www.vmgconsultants.co.za stablished in 1997 by Dick Vago, VMG Consultants has built a reputation as a business that enhances designs through a stringent process of collaboration with clients. The results truly speak for themselves as amazingly innovative ideas that have a transformative effect on the way in which many work. Since 1997, the business has gone through great change to keep up with the needs of the current marketplace. Perhaps the biggest period of transition was the change of ownership from Dick Vago to Nigel Pengelly in 2007. “When he [Dick] retired in 2007, I bought the business,” Nigel tells us. To him, buying a business with such an astonishing reputation was a no-brainer. “We also have NP&N Engineering Consultants based in Durban which I started in 1993.” Key to maintaining the high standards set by the business was creating an environment where staff could excel. “We are proud of our staff who strive to work together in providing a seamless service to our clients often under difficult circumstances,” Nigel says. “They think out of the box to offer great value on projects as well as going that extra mile to get things done.” Many great engineers have gotten their start at VMG Consultants, moving on to do great things in the air-conditioning and allied industries. The skills they have demonstrated here, however, were all developed at VMG Consultants. One of the clearest examples of their pioneering work can be see in their use of CO2 refrigeration. “We were the first to combine CO2 refrigeration with an air-conditioning system on a fairly large commercial (as opposed to industrial) scale,” Nigel tells us proudly. “Defying our peers, in 2015 we changed a chilled water design for the 30 000 sq. meter Eswatini Convention Centre to one which used the latest VRF technology on a grand scale. It is by far the largest VRF system in Southern Africa and certainly will be the most energy efficient of any conference or convention centre in the region.” This impressive work reflects the core values that guide the VMG Consultants team forward. “We aim to design systems that are fit for purpose and that will give our clients an asset/ energy advantage over their competitors,” Nigel explains to us. “As a general rule, in commercial buildings, air-conditioning Designing new properties for the 21st Century demands a bold new approach. The team behind VMG Consultants are proud to have built a reputation as mechanical consultants of choice for many building developers, architects, project managers, national retailers and property owners.
